Gwen Stacy Spider-Woman Gets Her Own Solo Series

Spider-GwenEven before the release of Edge of Spider-Verse #2, Spider-Man fans have wondered if the alternate version of Gwen Stacy, who’d been bitten by the radioactive spider instead of Peter, would be getting her own monthly series.  Certainly, it seemed possible given the overwhelming positive reaction.  Well, wonder no more.  In the “Retailer Exclusive: Meet Marvel” panel at this year’s New York Comic Con:

During this “closed door” panel…Marvel also revealed that the recently introduced Spider-Woman known as “Spider-Gwen” would be getting her own ongoing series in February, 2015. This new title, spinning out of the critically-acclaimed Edge of Spider-Verse #2 story, will see writer Jason Latour and artist Robbi Rodriguez returning to the character.

There was no new artwork or further details released by Marvel.  Nevertheless, it appears that, unlike her 616 counterpart, Gwen will survive Spider-Verse. The question is what the title of this new ongoing series will be (I’m thinking either The Amazing Spider-Woman, or Gwen Stacy: Spider-Woman), and whether or not it will take place in her world…or the 616 Marvel Universe.

  1. Best Spidey news I’ve heard from Comic-Con so far. I trust Hickman with Secret Wars, but it does look like it could be a Crisis-style reboot which worries me. I honestly hope 616 Peter survives Spider-Verse, because if Slott “kills” him again, what would be the point? He was “dead” like year ago? I guess it would be a full year when Spider-Verse concludes but still…

  2. I haven’t actually read anything she’s been in and I’m totally out of the loop, but am I the only one who thinks the whole idea of a spider-gwen is dumb in the first place? What about her character said, “this would be an interesting alternate spider-man”

Someone above said the character isn’t anything like Gwen anyway, which isn’t surprising since there was nothing about the character that demanded a super hero role. But then why even call it “Gwen Stacy” anyway, if you’re going to design a totally new character and just give her blonde hair and a headband?

I don’t mean to be excessively negative, I’m just so done with this stuff. It’s one more silly thing for Marvel to use to distract readers for a while. Wake me up when they finally decide to stop writing an “event” that destroys the universe twice a year, put somebody new on the book, and focus on just telling good spider-man stories.

  3. @4- I agree. I don’t see the attraction. She needs to stay dead no matter which universe we’re talking about. But I too am a sucker. I bought SSM, gambled and won by reading Superior Foes and will probably buy this, too. Maybe they they will enlist Conway to come up with a creative way to end the series!

  4. @7 – So he never said that Peter is going to be stranded in an alternate dimension, with Gwen as his replacement? Was just Bleeding Cool theorizing?
That’s a really good point about Slott and co’s bizarre desire to piss readers off. Choosing to use controversy instead of quality stories to boost sales is just seems stupid to me.

@8 – I’ve been expecting Marvel to resurrect her so they can cash in on the popularity boost Gwen has received from the Webb movies. I’m just hoping that Spider-Gwen is a far as they go.

  5. I worry about this, because I fear this will inadvertantly lead to Gwen’s resurrection in the 616 universe, a possibility all too likely if Secret Wars winds up being a crisis style reboot

  6. @#6- Apparently, all Humberto said was that people would be angry at the result. Which is pretty much what they say will be the result of EVERY big event.

Kind of wish that they’d start promising to make people HAPPY rather than just piss off the same people time and again.

  7. Again, did not like this character. I know she’s an alternate Gwen, but there is little resembling Gwen’s character in this rendition. I wanted to see a real What-if Gwen was Spider-Woman book, and this wasn’t it. Too punk-rock, too angsty, and she just wasn’t likeable.

    . . . . . . . . .gawd, I’m such a sucker. Totally gonna pick up this series. All this positive response, maybe Spider-Gwen deserves a second chance.

  8. Might be the best news out of Comic-Con, or at least the best Spidey-news we’ve gotten in a while that’s not 2099 related. Will definitely be picking it up.

  9. “writer Jason Latour and artist Robbi Rodriguez returning to the character” – That’s all I needed to hear. Very happy with this announcement.
