In spite of earlier reports of Sony pushing the original 2016 release date for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 to 2018, and the disappointing box-office returns for this summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it appears there are still plans underway to develop spin-off films taking place within the rebooted Spider-Man universe. According to Deadline, not only is The Sinister Six film still in the works and scheduled to be released on November 11, 2016, but they’re reporting there will also be another spin-off movie for 2017 featuring a female superhero.
After the villains emerge, get ready for the power of the women from the Spider-Man universe. Which characters they will develop is up for speculation, but we know that Lisa Joy Nolan (Westworld) has been hired to script and that again [Avi] Arad and [Matt] Tolmach are producing. There are several strong possibilities — Silver Sable, Black Cat, Stunner, Firestarter and Spider-Woman, to name a few.
The moves come only two weeks after Marvel Comics announced a gender change for its Thor character during The View — a change in the comic book world that sparked heated debate among fans. Also last month, filmmaker Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. unveiled the first images of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in the summer 2016 release of Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.
It was only a matter of time that someone would announce a female superhero movie — and it happens to be Sony who is the first out of the gate.
The most likely choice would probably be the Black Cat, a.k.a Felicia Hardy, who was played by Felicity Jones in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, although she was not a professional thief in that film but Norman Osborn’s (Chris Cooper), and then Harry Osborn’s (Dane DeHann), private secretary. That said, there are at least four different versions of Spider-Woman to choose from, the most notable being Jessica Drew. Not to mention characters like Arana, Mayday Parker, and the new character, Silk. What do you think?
@30- I’m just praying they don’t cast Halle Berry as a spinoff like they did with Catwoman, speaking of ripoffs. We all know how well she did as Storm, but cat-ladies just don’t seem to be her forte.
@#35
… you have made a powerful enemy this day, son.
I think Sony should finally give fans what they want…………..a Carly Cooper spin off.
How about a Flash and Harry movie where they discover they are actually long-lost brothers and go around solving mysteries?
Spider-Man’s bench of movie-potential characters is mighty weak.
Maybe they could do a spin-off about Paperdoll. That would get more of the ‘angsty’ crowd in to see Marvel movies.
@#29-YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My money is on this being a Spider-woman film. Black Cat would be viewed as a catwoman rip-off by the filmgoing non-comic obsessed populace.
@28 – I would stand in line for a Legion of Losers movie starring the Gibbon and the Grizzly fighting the White Rabbit written by Dematteis.
It’s in the execution. Sony talent doesn’t quite have what it takes. They could make a movie about the Gibbon and have it make millions of dollars, but only if the right talent was in control.
@#25-Because Jackpot was so well received! But guys….what if they do….an Ultimate Spider Woman movie. As in…female clone of Peter Parker…I’m sure George will be the first in line
@23 – There’s a Flying Nun joke to be made here but despite hearing all the jokes about the show over the years, I have never seen any episodes. But I expect the movie would probably be Sally Field flying into the sky to fight a giant purple cloud. It would make $600 million, to which Sony would say it was a financial disappointment.
Please let it be a Jackpot movie… Please let it be a Jackpot movie!
Or a teen bio-flick of Randi, Candi & Bambi.
… this reeks of desperation. Which I’m sure surprises absolutely no one at this point.
@hornacek – I would pay good money to watch a Goldie Oldie movie. Nothing would be more spectacular than Sally Field sharing the screen with a giant CGI Galactus.
@21 – As has been mentioned on the podcast, Sony sees the success of the Avengers movie franchise and since all they have is Spider-Man, they want to make that a similar franchise. Unfortunately, the Avengers are multiple heroes. Spider-Man is one hero. They are like Rumpelstiltskin’s untalented brother who can’t turn straw into gold but has convinced himself that he can, and is just spinning that wheel loading more and more straw into it, sure that just by pure force of will they can get gold to come out of it.
More seriously, Sony is desperate to mine whatever fragments they can out of their Spider-Man license, no matter how lame.
@19 – Silk wishes she could be that successful.
@Hornecek — I expect Silk to be as successful as Alpha!
@17
@16 – Coming soon from Sony … the adaptation of TROUBLE.
I think they’re focusing too much on the spinoffs. They’re Spider-Man films for a reason, because we want to see Spider-Man. I know character development is a big part of a movie franchise, but we can get character development into the mainstream movies. We don’t need a spinoff with every single movie for every single semi-important character. Also, on who it is, it’s very likely only Black Cat, since, besides Aunt May and Gwen, she’s the only female character who’s had more than three minutes of screen time in one movie besides Peter’s…. parents.
Oh. My. God. Maybe they’re focusing on Peter’s parents so much because they want to explain THEIR origins. Maybe they want to make a spinoff to explain the romance and lives of Richard and Mary Parker.
I only hope I’m not right in this one…
@#13-I agree about the Avengers thing and his team ups. I don’t think it violates the character, I just think he’s more interesting on his own or with ocassional DD/HUman Torch/Black Cat team ups
@13 – I’m calling it now, Sony will have a Goldie Oldie movie in 2020. Sally Field, start practicing your wire-work!
Well this was unexpected. At this rate I’m expecting to have spin offs about Aunt May, The Stacy’s, Peter’s Parents, Spider-Kid and The Burglar before ASM3 comes out.
I don’t think it’s going to be any of the Spider-Women/Girls , Avi Arad has been pretty firm on his stance on Peter being the only character to wear the webs in the Sony franchise. It’s most likely going to be Black Cat after her set up in ASM2.
“I completely disagree because frankly I don’t want Spider-Man as part of the chared MCU. I think it’s more interesting when he’s the lone super hero of his universe.” – I have to completely agree with this. I hate it when Spider-Man gets used in events, and have never been keen on him being in the Avengers. The only reason I’d like to see him in the MCU is so he could team with Daredevil.
I feel secure in saying they probably have the the rights to Mayday but not Jessica Drew. Sony’s deal with Marvel predates Bendis bringing Jessica Drew back and putting her in practically everything.
@#4 I think they don’t have the rights to Jessica Drew, but they do have the rights to Julia Carpenter and ugh Mattie Franklin.
@#6-I completely disagree because frankly I don’t want Spider-Man as part of the chared MCU. I think it’s more interesting when he’s the lone super hero of his universe and don’t think Sony has done a bad job at all. They’ve certainly demonstrated an understanding of the character and his mythology for the most part.
I love Felicia but I dunno if she can support a movie. And I don’t think Sony has done anything that could set up a Spider-Girl movie. As for Spider Woman is she even part of the Spider-Man franchise in the comics?
@4 – With my level of confidence in Sony, they would probably make a Spider-Woman movie about Mattie Franklin.
@7 – Does anyone really think we’ll still be talking about Silk a couple of years from now? Ha, “Timely”.
@8 – Catwoman’s story in that movie was changed so much it had no similarity to the DC character.
Wasn’t Catwoman a female super hero movie? Not a good one, but still, not exactly beating anyone out of the gate.
It makes Slott’s invention of Silk — a female Spider-Man — at this exact time rather Timely.
I think it about time Disney just outright purchased Sony Pictures and got the Spider-man universe shared with the Marvel universe. As it should be.
Amazing Spider-Man 2 was disappointing despite having many positives. And these plans to milk the franchise sound unconvincing based on the current track record.
As a personal aside, if Sony is planning on doing a Black Cat solo film, the immediate obstacle that comes to my mind is that the average, non-comic book reading movie-goer might think Sony/Marvel are ripping off DC’s Catwoman. Also, if Black Cat is getting her own film, don’t be the least bit surprised if she gets her origin story in The Sinister Six film and is a member of the team.
@#4 Jc McDonough — That’s a very good question!
The question I have, does Sony have the rights to Jessica Drew, Spider-Woman?
Or will they just use the name Spider-Woman and shove any random person into the costume and call it a day.
Nice catch, Craig! Heh!
This list of possible names seems highly suspect. I mean, does anyone think Sony is going to make a movie about Stunner???
And I don’t know about Firestarter. They already made a movie about her, but I suppose we could check how little Charlie McGee is doing as an adult (way to proofread your articles, Deadline).
My first guess is that it would wind up being a Black Cat movie.
My second guess is that it won’t ever get to production.
My third guess is that if it does actually manage to go into production it will be a Black Cat that actually has very little to do with the Black Cat that Spider-Fans know and love.
