“That’s quite a vote of confidence and I feel as if I have a lot to live up to…”
Peter David will be bringing Miguel O’Hara and Spider-Man 2099 back to the ongoing series format.
Via Newsarama:
After coming to back to our time in Superior Spider-Man last year, Spider-Man 2099 is branching out on his own in a brand new ongoing series in July. The new Spider-Man 2099 series stars Miguel O’Hara of course as a man out of time, thrust into the past (i.e. the present day Marvel Universe) with a goal to prevent the dark future he came from. Joining O’Hara on this crusade is the writer of the original Spider-Man 2099 series from the 1990s, Peter David, and artist Will Sliney from Fearless Defenders.
“Miguel is now trapped in the present day Marvel Universe, so straight away we have to deal with the fact that in the greatest of Marvel traditions, we have a hero out of time,” Sliney says, referring to Captain America who was frozen in the 1940s and awaked in modern times. “I’m looking forward to drawing that iconic costume in the surroundings of some of New York’s gritty and textured looking neighborhoods.”
…
Serious or not on that point, David says the new series will start with someone attempting to “remove Miguel violently” from this timeline. After that O’Hara will be pursuing the dealers behind Spider Slayers being sold to foreign countries, as well as delving into the just announced “Spider-Verse” event this fall. But there is a broader overarching story, according to David, dealing with Liz Allen and Miguel’s grandfather, Tiberius Stone.
In the original Spider-Man 2099 series set in the far-flung future year of 2099 (of course), the world was at the mercy of a tyrannical mega-corporation known as Alchemax, headed up by Tyler Stone – O’Hara’s father, and Tiberius’s son.
There you go everyone, Miguel is back and his original creator is back as well. Thoughts?
UPDATE: Edited by George to add that the book will be coming in July. Also to point out that while Peter David previously denied being involved with this, his wording was quite specific back then. So he was being coy and more than a little cagey, which is what many of us had hoped. What David denied, specifically, was being involved with a SM2099 title ‘in May,’ and said that such a book was not scheduled. Technically he wasn’t fibbing – it’s coming in July. Heh. Also, Brad’s given me the greenlight on reviewing the new title for the Crawlspace. July’s going to be a great month! Go brush up on your 2099 and get ready, bitheads! –George!
UPDATE 2: George again. Peter David has clarified his earlier denial from February on his website:
The news is officially out on Newsarama so I can tell you guys now: Yes, I will be writing the new Spider-Man 2099 comic. When word of this first circulated weeks ago, I really did NOT know I’d be on board. Marvel only contacted me two weeks ago about it. The first issue ships in July. Be sure to be there.

BD Edit: Marvel just sent me an e-mail press release here it is.
The Future is Now! Prepare Yourselves for SPIDER-MAN 2099 #1!
Get ready to party like it’s 2099, bitheads! Because YOU demanded it – Spider-Man 2099 is back and he’s here to stay inSPIDER-MAN 2099 #1! From the splintered fringes of time comes an all-new ongoing series from legendary Spider-Man 2099 creator Peter David (All-New X-Factor, Amazing Spider-Man) and fan-favorite artist Will Sliney (Fearless Defenders, Superior Spider-Man Team-Up)!
Stranded in the present day after the events of the New York Times best-selling Superior Spider-Man series, Miguel O’Hara must come to terms with living in the year 2014. Undercover in the employ of mega-corporation Alchemax, he’ll attempt to change the course of his future and prevent the rise of one of his greatest villains!
“Miguel becomes determined to try and transform his grandfather, Tiberius Stone into a decent guy in the hopes that it will wind up informing the raising of Tyler Stone, and perhaps make him a better person,” says writer Peter David in an interview with Marvel.com. “In short, he’s hoping that he can influence the development of both the present and future of Alchemax.”
“He’s going to find that’s not as easy as he’d hoped,” David continued.
“It’s going to be a huge year for all things Spider!” added series editor Ellie Pyle “This is your chance to get to know Spider-Man 2099 before the Spider-Man universe gets more crowded, and Peter and Will have prepared quite the introduction!”
Can one man change the future? When the dust settles – will there still be a future worth fighting for? The battle fortomorrow begins this July in SPIDER-MAN 2099 #1!

Oh wow somehow I missed this news. I am really excited for this!!! I might actually be more excited for this than ASM#1 because I always knew that was coming, a new Spider-man 2099 AND written by Peter David was absolutely not something I was sure would ever happen.
Praise to Jesus this is really happening
@17 – And Spitfire and the Troubleshooters!
@12 “There are not many things from the 90′s that I look back at fondly. This is one of the few!”
Absolutely. I still have most of the run. Too bad the rest of the 2099 comics were craptacular.
Now if they would only bring back D.P.7…
I’ve been meaning to read the original 2099 series forever so this seems like a good time.
Great news! Hopefully Marvel will finish releasing the original series in TPB form as well.
@4: Nothing wrong with that at all.
I haven’t read much Spidey 2099, but I like that they’re putting him in his own series again. Maybe this will get me to finally read some more of the original series.
#8 ryan3178 — Oh, without a doubt. The way Slott set-up Miquel situation in Superior Spider-Man #19 was just begging for a new Spider-Man 2099 series, so it was inevitable that we wer’re going to get one at some point. Getting Miquel’s creator, Peter David on it, though? That’s a dream come true, right there.
#11 AmFan15 — Couldn’t agree more, good sir.
@#12 George Berryman — Not to mention a new book for the Spidery-Satellite review for you and Brad to do on the podcast. 😉
@11 – “PAD’s original 2099 run was absolutely fantastic, and some of the best comics of that era.”
There are not many things from the 90’s that I look back at fondly. This is one of the few!
This is the best news I’ve heard all day. PAD’s original 2099 run was absolutely fantastic, and some of the best comics of that era. This is an instant-buy from me.
I never realized the original SM 2099 went 46 issues. I think I stopped after nine or 10.
I hope he doesn’t do anything to disrupt the space-time continuum because then he’ll never be born and the whole thing will never happen…perhaps that will negate the deal with Mephisto. *L*
In fact, Slott gave a perfect setup for PAD to now run with for the new series. Miguel is taking advantage of a horrible situation. He’s trying to make Alchemax become more of a less “evil” corporation and trying to get his grandfather to start being a jerk and be a decent man. Let’s face it, Ty Stone feels he’s so smart everyone should be bowing down to him. Hence why he became the Kingpin’s inside man at Horizon Labs and now why he is one the main members of Alchemax. He wants to take over at some point, Ty is power hungry and of course his future son ended up the same way.
@5 – Yeah I’m going to call b.s. on that and ask WTF? There are many valid criticisms that can be made of Slott’s work on Spider-Man but that’s not one of them. There’s nothing in Slott’s history on the title to back that up. Consider that nipped in the bud by an admin because damn.
@5
What?!?!? What’s that supposed to mean? It’s because of Slott that Miguel is back in the first place. Peter David even acknowledges this on his Twitter when someone thanked him for Bringing Miguel back: “Dan Slott brought him back. I’m just along for the ride.”
They better hope Slott doesn’t get his hands on him. He’ll probably turn Miguel into a child molestor or something to try to make him more “Edgy.”
Peter David lied to me about not doing this book, I’m so angry!
Peter David will be writing an ongoing Spider-Man 2099 book, I forgive you Peter David!
(I know he clarified that he didn’t lie when he said he wasn’t doing this book, but this was my original thought when I saw this on Facebook)
Is it wrong that I’m looking forward to this title more than ASM #1?
Miguel ain’t dying any time soon, then.
Thanks for the update, George.
I’ve not read the original run, but I like the concept from what I’ve seen in Superior. I really liked Edge of Time as well.
I bet this news has made a lot of people happy though.
