@#17-I think at best Slott is a fan of Mary Jane as she was up until Stern’s run or maybe before (but carefully omitting that character development in Conway’s run). At worst he doesn’t like the character, or appreciate she wasn’t ACTUALLY the party girl or maybe he’s just butthurt that his awesome love interest Carlie Cooper crashed ad burned so spectacularly.
What it all boils down to is creating unnecessary drama to toy with the fans of the pairing by giving them what they want (more Peter and MJ) but not how they want it (MJ’s with Pedro, she’s probably mad at Peter or something, whatever). Kind of like Superior #2, but not as weird/disgusting. Since Slott apparently isn’t a fan of her (is this true?), but probably has to use her in some way at this point, this is what we get.
@#15-But again, it doens’t make sense for MJ to be with Pedro. If he’s just a second-hand Peter Parker who she’s only with on the rebound from Peter (i.e. she’s basically only with him because she can’t be with Peter for real) and she’s only on the rebound from peter due to something Peter didn’t even do then it’s just silly.
I don’t recall Peter being replaced by a super villain before now exempting Last Hunt and she tolerated that so I don’t see why she wouldn’t tolerate this?
@12 The benefit of telling the story in the book, over the movie is it can be explored in more detail. MJ and John wasn’t really explored, it’s sounds as now Spider-Man and Pedro are going to have to work together.
At present MJ doesn’t consider Peter a hero, given his recent behaviour. Even when Peter has explained the situation she still may prefer the guy who doesn’t get replaced by super villains on a regular basis.
I don’t want to give the wrong impression, I am a fan of Peter and MJ together, but I’m ok to explore some different ideas. Peter’s about to prove he’s the Superior Spider-Man, next he can prove he’s the Superior Peter.
Slott uses MJ to express his annoyance on all the fans who like her, and who didn’t like his Carlie Cooper.
@#12-Who wants to bet they’ll get together only at the very, very end of Slott’s run?
@7- It would be “slightly fresher” for MJ to date a “real life hero” compared to Peter… if the second Spider-Man film didn’t do it first, over a decade ago.
But, really, I’m not surprised about this situation. I doubted that the end of Superior would end with Peter and MJ getting back together. They’ll string this out for another year at most, with both “realizing” their “feelings” for one another again. Because we haven’t been through THAT story enough times.
Again, we’ve seen what happens when MJ and Peter split up in the past and this ain’t it. Additionally I don’t see how it’s a challenge if thus far she’s basically only gone out with Pedro on a rebound because he’s superficially similar to Peter. If MJ knows that actually Peter like Pedro is a real hero, why would she go for the guy who’s like the actual guy she’s in love with, when she could just BE with the guy she’s in love with? Not to mention it only happened because their relationship fell apart due to Doc Ock and not Peter’s doing.
@#8-But again that rather runs counter to their relationship up until this point. He doesn’t really need to win her back.
“He may be Spidey’s biggest fan, but he’s about to become one of his worst enemies.”
Irony.
Forgot to mention the Ultimate solicitations:
• Miles has made a huge choice about the woman he loves. Will he live to regret it?
&
• What villainess does Spider-Man fall in love with?
Forget Pedro vs. Peter, looks like Miles’ love life is firing on all cylinders.
I think it would be interesting to see how Peter and Pedro interact.
From the outside Peter is a loser, and Pedro is a real life hero. It’s an obvious story for MJ to date a clichéd bad guy, this is slightly fresher ground. Winning MJ back from a bad boy would be easy, Peter needs obstacles, and winning MJ back from a more grounded version of Spider-Man will be a challenge.
But Peter always overcomes his challenges.
@#5-Pedro is a glorified rebound
But did we see them actually hook up?
That would be a f***ing terrible direction to take Peter and his relationships with everyone. You might as well retcon all those times they interacted. Also surely he’d still be able to figure out she’s mad because of stuff that happened when Otto was in charge and tell it to her straight?
@#2 AndrewRoebuck — Yeah, it sure looks that way. But Pedro Olivera’s definitely a sap if he still hasn’t figured out that the only reason MJ is even going out with him is because he’s a watered-down version of Peter. Then again, given that it’s MJ, he may be clueless for obvious reasons. 😛
@#3 fantasyfreak — Well, Flash/Venom is on the cover. Plus, it’s the not first time Marvel has had a character appear on multiple teams at once at virtually the same time; Wolverine has been getting away with it for years.
@#4 Big Al — “…when the Hell did MJ and Pedro even hook up?” Since Superior Spider-Man #20. If you recall, Pedro is the same firefighter who rescued MJ from her nightclub fire in Superior Spider-Man #10, and the joke was that MJ, thinking he was Peter as she was slipping into unconsciousness, called him “Peter,” which, of course, just so happened he his first name (Pedro is the Spanish variant of Peter). When MJ finally got a hold of SpOck after repeated telephone calls, she was pissed off over the fact that not only had he not come to her rescue when he knew she was in danger (SpOck, too busy going after Tombstone, sent the firetrucks instead), but that he never bothered to check up on her afterwards to see if she was okay. Thus MJ said she was done with “Peter” for good and was moving on. So she tracked down Pedro Olivera at his firehouse and attempted to her “Face it, Tiger, you just hit the jackpot!” routine on him, only to be jumped by his dog. He still asked her out for coffee and they’ve been going ever since then.
“Then there’s the Black Cat thing? Again, we’re making her a villainess AGAIN. Shouldn’t Peter just explain the truth to her (or shouldn’t she just be able to figure out it wasn’t Peter) and then the matter is settled?” Ah, but you’re forgetting two things here, Big Al. First is that ever since Doc Ock took over Peter’s mind and body, all the characters who should no better, including MJ and the Avengers, have all been taking “stupid pills” (i.e. a plot-induced reduction in common sense and deductive reasoning) in order for SpOck to maintain his charade. And secondly, because Otto erased most of Peter’s memories so he only has 31 left, not only may Peter have no recollection of his relationship with the Black Cat, he may not even remember who she is.
Is anyone genuinely interested in Pedro unto himself or his relationship with MJ? No one cares beyond wanting them to just break up and MJ to get back with Peter but no, we have to do this story because we haven’t seen it before right? Granted we genuinely haven’t seen it before with Peter and Mary Jane but we’ve seen it a million times in other stories. And again, frankly for MJ and Peter to break up and stay broken up, it’s inherently out of character. We know this from JMS’ run. And quite apart from that when the Hell did MJ and Pedro even hook up?
Then there’s the Black Cat thing? Again, we’re making her a villainess AGAIN. Shouldn’t Peter just explain the truth to her (or shouldn’t she just be able to figure out it wasn’t Peter) and then the matter is settled?
Why is Thunderbolts still Spider-related if Venom goes over to the Guardians of the Galaxy?
I guess this takes Ollie out of the running for Green Goblin sidekick/helper.
MJ with a boyfriend (and no husband either) not named Peter Parker?
Thanks, I’ll pass.
