I don’t get the Slott hate myself but everyone has their likes and dislikes. I didn’t care for JMS but I acknowledge he has his fans. Thing is, I didn’t drop the book under JMS. I guess I just wish fans would “ride it out”. It’s like somebody posted above, there’s going to be a new writer eventually.
@40- I technically only got into the Spidey fanchise when I started in Civil War. I have to admit, the franchise is a bit bumpy (heck, I think Superior has told us that already), but here’s the thing about comic collectors: They have EXPECTATIONS. They have their own point of view, and different tastes. For example, I actually want Pete and Carlie back together, but others might be writhing in agony at the thought. The only reason I keep buying the Superior Line for three reasons: 1) the Great art (I love Ramos and Stegman, but Camuncoli..), 2) to see Otto get his @ss handed to him in the end of Goblin Nation; 3) I don’t want a gap in my spider collection. I really don’t like this turn the series has taken, and for good reason: A dying man stole the life of a person who works overtime to protect others in fear of replicating his past mistakes. In ASM 700, Otto claims he won’t do villainous things, he’ll change his morals and will be a better Spider-Man. But by the time SSM 13 comes around, he’s still playing the trump cards he was waiting for, blackmailing Jameson and declaring WAR on Shadowland. It’s okay to say that you like Slott, but don’t thrash people for hating a man who destroyed a character we’ve loved since we were children.
@42 – I did, I did stop buying after ASM700. I’ve been vocal here about how my only Spidey fix has been the cartoon and the daily strip. It didn’t matter to me how well written the stories were after that. It wasn’t Spider-Man. Marvel could call the character or book whatever they wanted, it wasn’t the same person. It was someone that had killed that person and had stolen their life, and Marvel was telling us “this is your new hero!” No thanks. I’ve been happily sending my $3.99 to a more worthy Spidey source.
@46 – Easy on what you would do to Quesada, let’s all play nice here.
@40 I’ll admit I was one of those fans who dropped Spider-Man after the Clone Saga, partly because I didn’t want to read a title that didn’t have Peter as Spider-Man and partly because I was going through a tough period financially and had to quit collecting comics for awhile. My love for Spider-Man never faded and when I got a second job that afforded me a little extra spending money, I picked up Spidey again and made the effort to fill in my collection with the years I missed. I’ve been a loyal reader since. Like many, there have been things I haven’t liked about Spidey in the last six years, but I’ve given it a chance and some of it has grown on me.
#43-44 Well, I haven’t been hired by Marvel yet(you’ll know if I am because the first thing I’d do is execute Quesada in a few creative ways), and I don’t have any agenda, unless you count everlasting contempt for “fans” who let companies do whatever they want and ruin any quality control by simultaneously whining about anything and buying said anything as an “agenda”.
Long, long ago, a vote with your wallet counted. Clone saga almost driven Marvel bankrupt, which forced, FORCED them to improve their storylines or at least end that bloody mess. If Marvel was there in the state it is now, the Clone Saga would have still been going because no one understands a single logic chain “Do not like – do not buy”. I’m not even saying do not play/watch/read whatever(that you have to do to some extend to make valid points in criticism), just don’t support the people that do nothing but wrong you. What is so difficult about that for this generation of customers?
I actually know a few people who stopped buying. I stopped after a couple of issues as I wanted to give it a chance first. And no,not buried under thousands of false claims just yet, lol!
I enjoyed the five issue ASM that came out last month though, made me realise how much I missed that.
J-R!
@ #40 Also, congratulations on being hired by marvel!
@ #40 Check my posts under “What did you order this month?”
and you’ll see I did stop buying.
What on earth is your agenda anyway??
@41 I’m going to predict a lot of people will say or think “Pfft, I stopped buying”, which to me is about as credible as “I boycotted EA”. Sure, someone out there who actually did this might exist, but he or she is buried under thousands of claims we all know are false.
@40 – Please stop be so vague, tell us what you REALLY think of us!
And I did stop buying so I guess your rant isn’t about me.
Look at you all. I absolutely understand why Slott and Marvel hold so much contempt towards “fans”. Fans are ungrateful, whiny creatures, that ruined criticism itself and made it look like a “whine about anything before and after always buying it anyway”. When Slott did things for you like kicking Cooper off love interest list and doing as much MJ ship tease as humanly possible without hanging Quesada by his testicles first(Spider-Island), you ignored that.
But when he decided to take a story in a new direction, when he tried to open a new horizon with a different kind of hero who is not “just an asshole” but using a supervillain methods to do a hero’s work which hasn’t been done yet(Knightfall, Lethal Protector, and all that other bullshit many of you no doubt like went for “just an asshole” route), you suddenly forget everything Slott done to improve the titles and bring out the pitchforks like your religion got insulted. While still buying and demanding more, Superior sales alone show your hypocrisy.
While all you had to do to truly hurt them is stop buying. But we all know that will never going to happen. You will continue to buy, don’t even deny that, and you will continue to whine about everything you don’t like, in vain hopes of bullying the industry into submitting to your whims and then whining anyway when they do, such as here. Though of course you have no impact over what happens, it’s just so the movie goers wouldn’t get confused when trying to get into the comics after seeing the next movie. But even after your beloved unchanging status quo is restored you still whine. And you will whine, regardless of what stories will be there. Because that’s your only function, to whine. Well, and to buy. So two functions, I guess.
So, given how much of likable chaps you are, is it really any wonder why Slott and Marvel hate you?
@#38
This is nothing. Apparently you’ve never witnessed a legendary “Wacker” thread.
And when I say legendary, I mean for all the wrong reasons…
Wow, I have never seenso many comments on a single item. Is this a record? What is the record?
There’s some major ups and major downs in this news. The first con could be that it’s just something that Marvel is doing to advertise the next ASM movie. The first pro is that it may be Pete’s real return. Hooray!
Second con is Slott writing. I don that him as a person, but I must say his work on Superior has traumatized me. I have this weird feeling that he releases all of his erotic fantasies through this title, and it won’t be called Fanfiction that way. Hell, even BENDIS or a writer before Slott’s would be better in my opinion.
My second pro is that Ramos is doing the art for this one. Since Ramos does so much work for Slott, it’s most likely a subtle confirmation that it’s the return of the real Pete. Other than that, I really do like his art. And before you all rage at me (I’m talking to you, Chris), I just really love the way he exaggerates the figure of some characters, and his pencils go really well with Degaldo’s tough colors.
My third con… This is a backwards loop to OMD. I want Pete and MJ back together as much as the next fan, but the take on Pete being with somebody else pulls us and makes us wonder what will happen with this relationship. For example, I actually did like the Peter/Carlie romance (Don and Chris are raging in their seats now) because it took a break from what we had for more than 300 issues and gave us a look at what Pete’s options were. This makes a character more identifiable in my opinion, because we see something we didn’t think would happen. And at this point… recycling that relationship may be all that’s left for Slott in his tray. MJ has pretty much given up on him, Anna Maria only knows the Otto in Peter, and Gwen.. well, you know. But Carlie is the only girl left in Peter’s life at this point, and that may even go away with the Goblin Nation. So, the only option left is to speculate.
Good to have you back, Pete. Missed you since you left for Superior, Humberto. Excelsior!
Step 1 – get Peter and the real Spider-Man back.
Step 2 – play the waiting game until we get some new blood. All writers leave eventually.
I don’t mean to sound so mean to Slott. I don’t feel this way about him personally (although his actions towards fans since he became the writer don’t make me want to hang around with him), it’s his writing that I’m tired of. Plus it feels like he’s he’s been writing the book FOREVER. It’s time for someone new.
So excited for Peter, so not excited for Ramos and Slott. I guess I have to vote with my dollars though…
@ #20 and marvel – PLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASE!!!
#20 good idea!
#7 I totally agree
another brick in the wall….
… the same people that screwed him up in the first place are still involved, minus Wacker. Why are you excited?
@29 I am going to hold on to that yet. I do hope I’m right.
@14 – Don’t get me wrong, I agree with what you said. My #11 post was more to point out Slott’s usual defense of any of his plot contrivances. Plus it reminded me of Chris’ (?) impersonation of him from a few podcasts ago.
@20 – So in this scenario is Mephisto the Boogeyman? That’s right, Quantum Leap callback!
@25 – Yet.
@28 – Yes, that cover does look happy and carefree!
That’s the gayest cover I’ve ever seen. Ramos suck’s!
@20 if only!
@25 Conciliation, if I know how to spell.
@24 At least, as a small conslidation, DC isn’t rebooting all their books yearly.
@23 I was disappointed when D.C. decided to reboot its titles and renumber everything. I was a longtime Superman reader, but just couldn’t get into the reboot. I thought it would have been cool to own issue 1,000 of a comic. I’ll never see that in my lifetime.
Yay, Amazing’s back. Yay, it’s Dan Slott. Yay, it’s a number one. (Monotoned)
Now excuse me while I go cry in the corner because for some god awfull reason Marvel is afraid of a book with a number higher than 10 on it’s over.
Slott? Uncheck!
No Pete/MJ marriage? Uncheck!
Is anyone really surprised that ASM is returning just in time for the new movie? While I’m enjoying SSM, I’m excited for Peter to come back. Nothing beats the original costume!
Realizing New York is worse off with Otto as Spider-Man, Mephisto makes a return and negates his deal with MJ and Peter, thus setting right what once was wrong (Quantum Leap much?).
The Quesadaverse legacy continueth.
Well, you wanted it, enjoy getting kicked back into the world of dusty stagnated stories with no progression ever.
@2 yeah, I feel the same. I’ve made a point of not buying SSM as I refused to support their treatment of Peter since ASM 700. If this is the return of Peter to the ongoing title I feel I have to support the move the only way Marvel will care, with a sale.
I’ve got my concerns about Slott remaining and would prefer a new creative team but I’ll buy the book regardless on principle.
HELL YEAH!!! 2014 IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!
Great to see peter is back… Shame about the new number 1 because after issue 99 will be #800 anyways so it’s just a complete money grab.
Would have really been keen to see some fresh blood on the book at least a new writer. I think maybe the best thing for this book to do would go back to just being published monthly instead of twice monthy. Bring in a new satellite title to allow a diffrent writer to work on the character with out a team up aspect. And have 2099 come back (which I feel will be called superiour spider-man with a new number one)
Over all I’m more excited about the movie than anything being done in the comics which is kinda sad when it’s your fav character.
Lets just hope slott and humberto can bring out the big guns and give us the best spidey/ Peter Parker story’s because that’s who we are going to have for the future.
Damn. I was really hoping for Fraction. The sad part is that I will still buy it. I will still be loyal to my friendly neighborhood spider-man.
#11: okay I know you and others will criticize this, but Spidey is THE comic hero. He is the Huck Finn & Holden Caulfield of the comic book industry. He changed everything. He deserves a writer & artist who will respect his history and standing in literature.
Is this overstated? Yes. But, look at the impact he has had on popular culture and the rest of the comic book industry. Viva Spidey!
@#5- I get that Slott might not want to move on. But the whole “The title is selling well under him” thing is really only applicable for Superior Spider-Man. Yes, that title got good sales, due to interest in the premises. But keep in mind that he was on the book for a LONG time before that, and never really reached those sales figures. Time will tell if the title will stay at Superior’s numbers, or if it will fall back to it’s previous ranking. Which would show it was the gimmick- and not Slott- that was the real draw.
Superior seems to be reaching a natural boiling point. I would also be shocked if the ASM relaunch is some kind of “untold tales” series as I’m assuming that’s just CBR trying to save face for Marvel and Slott after exposing the leak and spoiling some semblance of what’s to come over the next few months. But I guess some will continue to be angry about something because … well… because …
@10 – “COME OOOOOOOON GUYS, IT’S A COOOOOOMIC BOOOOOOK!!!!!”
I’ll be very surprised if it isn’t Peter returning. I don’t think anyone has ever really questioned that this would happen, and the release of this issue is roughly coinciding with the movie, which is exactly what everyone always assumed would happen for Peter’s return since if you’ve got a movie starring Peter you want a comic starring him to market to the viewers.
I know Slott has done his little song and dance about insisting that Peter is dead for good but I was assuming everyone knew better than to take him seriously on that at this point.
Comic book resources is trying to say that this is set in the pre-Superior days and it’s a “lost episodes” type thing and that Superior will continue under a new creative team. Frankly, I think its’ just wishful thinking on their part. Anyone really believe that Slott’s ego will allow him to write anything but the main Spider-man title? And yes, the man has a huge ego, seeing as how he gets so defensive and angry and spiteful when someone wounds his fragile ego by criticizing Superior Spider-man.
I’ll believe it when I see it. They want you to believe it’s Peter, but I bet at the end of “Goblin Nation”, Ock realizes he’s not Superior, but decides he’s still pretty amazing. Then decides that maybe he shouldn’t be so serious, which is why he’s smiling in the picture.
I’m starting to get angry, so I better stop writing.
Will Ramos ever NOT draw Spidey so we can have something that looks good again? 🙁
It’s far too late for me to give a damn.
It’s always possible that Slott is doing the beginning of the new Amazing because it’s still a vital part of his Superior story and then moving aside. But like BD himself pointed out, Slott surely doesn’t want to quit the book and since it is selling well under him Marvel doesn’t have that reason to move him. Basically there’s just no point in making assumptions right now until we get some official word on it from Marvel.
Slott and Ramos are still working on this?
Pass.
What does this mean for superior team-up?
It feels terrible that I’m not more excited by this news. If this is the real Peter (and it looks like it is) then I will buy it, but because Slott is still writing it I am not looking forward to it as I should be.
Plus it’s a #1? Ugh. Marvel, get over yourself and your renumbering.
Another year and then I bet Slott will move on.
