I agree that JMS counts as overrated. None of his villains were any good, he stripped the whole series down to only three characters (Peter, MJ, and Aunt May), he was responsible for the execrable Sins Past, he was very much responsible for OMD even though he tried to wash his hands of it later, and over-all he turned the series into The Mystical Fatalistic Web of Spider-Man. His good characterizations of MJ and May don’t compensate for all of that, in my opinion.
