Before Roderick Kingsley’s death in “Amazing Spider-Man” issue 649, he actually had a demise decades earlier. In “Web of Spider-Man” issue 29, Kingsley was shot and left for dead. When he reappeared in the 90’s people wondered why he hadn’t shown up….it was because he was killed off! It was later retconned that he was only grazed by the arm and that this was his brother Daniel standing in for him.

Yes, that was the final straw for me too. I’ll return once Spider-Man actually once again becomes a comic book and character I can like
Dan Slott (seemingly) killing off the Hobgoblin/Roderick Kingsley caused me to drop Amazing Spider-Man for the foreseeable future. I’ll gladly return once that horrible mistake is undone or revealed to be a ruse on Kingsley’s part, which would actually make sense.
Stern’s run on the Hobgoblin was awesome. Defalco messed it up a little bit, and David did the best he could with what he had to end the mystery. Then Stern came back and, yes it was a retcon, but it worked.
Then years later Slott crapped over all of that by bringing Kinglsey back just to kill him off by a character that had always been a good guy but Slott turned him evil because …. well, no one really knows. SSSLLLOOOTTTTTT!!!
Man, I loved the Hobgoblin arc in the ’80s.
Still not convinced his current “death” actually happened though… pretty sure Phil is brainwashed this entire time. It’s the only way to explain all the weirdness with him now.
Nice bit of trivia there! I actually didn’t know that!
