It seems a certain Amazing writer is breaking his new years resolution of 2011 and hitting the message boards pretty hard again. Amazing Spider-Man writer Dan Slott recently had some interesting quotes over on the CBR board. Read them and feel free to discuss.
“Sorry, sourpuss. It’s not like I bust your nut for things Don’tPeeInTheDeadPool posts, right? Why don’t you PM me when your internet-panties unbunch? “
And then there’s this Wheel of Fortune quote where you can make your own insult up.
“Every time you post, I wonder, “Can he be more of an *** ***?” (sp?)”
“slott, and wacker, are engaging with fans on forums like cbr.”
Because CBR let’s them get away with insulting people who don’t share their opinion on the book.
“picking up on every single thing slott says and putting it across (out of context too) to establish that he’s some sort of a “bad person” or whatever isn’t news.”
http://arsmarginal.wordpress.com/2010/12/23/dan-slott-we-are-sick-of-your-shit/.
This link proves that there is an escalating pattern to Dan Slott’s behavior. To ignore that proves what your angle really is.
You CBR people are funny.
@#191
As always, one thread, ONE THREAD, and you claim to know every god damn thing there is to know about this site. You go right past the comics news, caption contest, current book reviews… WHICH HAVE BEEN GOOD!!! Which explains why you skipped them… and you focus completely on whatever you see that can be used to portray this site in a negative light. Yeah, this thread de-evolved into a trainwreck long ago, but guess what… you ain’t helpin’! Nobody needs to gain attention from people like you. This is a great site regardless of what you think. Mostly because while there are PLENTY of opinions here that I do and don’t agree with, the webmaster actually lets them have opinions! The problem being that many have abused that right!
Why was this posted? Well despite the fact that it didn’t turn out that well, Slott is directly involved with what this site is about… SPIDER-MAN. So that makes him news. Could it have been handled better? Perhaps. Some may not fault him for it, some may wish he acted more professionally. That’s the difference of opinions at work. Me, if someone talks **** to me, I’ll talk **** back, I dont care what others think. But just because the thread went to hell, doesn’t mean that was the original intention. Could it be possible that BD was hoping for a civil discussion on the topic before it went all to ****?
AND WHY IS SLOTT TRACKING THE SITE ON HIS IPHONE?!?!?
haven’t read 193 other comments but the mnute i saw this “news” i thought this is becoming outright unfair… picking up on every single thing slott says and putting it across (out of context too) to establish that he’s some sort of a “bad person” or whatever isn’t news.
slott, and wacker, are engaging with fans on forums like cbr. do you expect them to just go “yeah, you know what, you said spider-island sucked so i guess you’re right”.
whatever you think of slott and wacker, they’re doing their job and despite what your opinion on the books or even their attitude might dictate, slott is putting his all into spider-man and it’s not big or clever to single out select quotes from slott to make him seem like some mean internet bully, and ignore any of the posts where he’s friendly or funny or whatever.
“There’s no wonder Crawlspace has such a negative reputation from fans and creators alike.”
And yet the creators and the so called fans who hate the site still come here. It must burn you to know that.
Hey, I like CBR. It’s the best place to talk about football.
“We’re Spider-Man fans disgusted at the state of this website, putting petty “he said/she said” bullshit up before actual ASM news”
Yea, you’re from CBR alright. Only someone from CBR would ignore what was being discussed and the reasons in why it was discussed in order to bashed this site for it. The hypocritical part of all of this is the fact that they are taking our own post and posting it on their site.
What a shock.
@191
Or
OR
We’re Spider-Man fans disgusted at the state of this website, putting petty “he said/she said” bullshit up before actual ASM news, just to keep pushing their agenda. Talking about “trying to gain attention for themselves”. Its a damn shame, because this website has its merits(Bertone’s Betty articles, the Spider-Man news clip, along with some really knowledgeable spidey fans), but its overshadowed by crap like this thread. There’s no wonder Crawlspace has such a negative reputation from fans and creators alike.
“#188–No, it doesn’t pass for acceptable behavior. That’s why the guy who said it was banned two posts before yours.”
Crazy Chris, Red is probably from CBR. If you go to their site,(http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=351434&page=140) they have a thread talking about what is happing with Slot and this board and making the same sad talking points bashing this site and defending Dan Slot and Steve Wacker’s behavior, despite the proof to the contrary. its just their way of trying to gain attention for themselves and to spread rumors to bash this site.
Its not worth your time
Red Spider- care to retract your statement?
#188–No, it doesn’t pass for acceptable behavior. That’s why the guy who said it was banned two posts before yours.
That tombstone comment is unreal. THAT is what passes for acceptable behavior here? I hope the creators behind this site do some real thinking about what they want this site to accomplish – a celebration of the best comic book character or furthering their own petty little issues. Disgusting.
“Wow. I’m happy I stopped coming here. :-/ What the hell happened to this site.”
Wow, you CBR boys sure do talk a lot. Love how you guys are bad mouthing us over there yet you guys are talking about this discussion and posting our comments on it on your site.
What can you do.
And an instant ban for Dexter Fletcher for comment # 179 and the tombstone comment against Slott.
“Slott needs a tombstone.” –Dexter Fletcher, Post #179
This is the hate that this site is capable of.
Dexter Fletcher, a regular poster.
Brad, two quotes that were weeks apart– two quick replies to trolls (one who was taking shots at a co-worker) — written WEEKS apart. This was NOT “news.’
That was you playing to your audience. An audience YOU have cultivated here.
There were dozens of actual REAL news developments going on with Spider-Man that you chose NOT to run in favor of THAT. That were HUNDREDS of POSITIVE interactions that I had with fans in that time period that DIDN’T work into your narrative about me. You chose THOSE two quick posts to frame a story that would play well with your base.
And George, last time, maybe you’ll get it, maybe you won’t. It’s NOT semantics. It’s repetition and how YOU chose to portray it and set it.
In a time when I was infirm, in pain, medicated, and in a bad way, I made a mistake. Someone baited me and I had a very human and stupid response. It was a bad call. I shouldn’t have done it. But I did. That ONE time in 20 years of working in this industry, I told a fan to go “f*** himself.” One time.
You, a MOD, at this site, knowing full well the context of that post, chose to frame it this way: “Dan Slott tells fans to go f*** themselves.” YOU chose to portray it as something I regularly do to a number of fans. And that’s wrong.
And you did it MULTIPLE times on this board.
“Dan Slott tells fans to go f*** themselves.”
“Dan Slott tells fans to go f*** themselves.”
“Dan Slott tells fans to go f*** themselves.”
“Dan Slott tells fans to go f*** themselves.”
“Dan Slott tells fans to go f*** themselves.”
“Dan Slott tells fans to go f*** themselves.”
“Dan Slott tells fans to go f*** themselves.”
“Dan Slott tells fans to go f*** themselves.”
“Dan Slott tells fans to go f*** themselves.”
“Dan Slott tells fans to go f*** themselves.”
“Dan Slott tells fans to go f*** themselves.”
Not once. Multiple times. Through repetition you framed your narrative. You kept doing it. And you try to make it sound like it’s fine because it’s a matter of a few letters and/or punctuation. It’s not. It’s the IDEA that you put out there and the idea that you pushed on NUMEROUS occasions. Does THAT make sense? Do you see the difference?
Am I culpable for Dexter Fletcher and some of the reactions of the worst element here?
Yes, on some level, I am. Because I’ve taken the bait and fed some trolls.
Am I responsible for their behavior? No. That’s theirs and theirs alone. That’s not on Brad, or George, or their parents, or anyone. It’s their OWN actions.
Does Brad have any part of this on his plate?
Yes. Because there’s an atmosphere here that you have allowed to grow– and with “news” stories and posts like the one that started this thread– you’ve FED into it.
I HAVE seen some good things here at this site. I have seen people who’ve used it to cultivate friendships and share wonderful experiences. I’ve seen it used to promote fun– to be a really neat resource and hub for amazing articles, pictures, and media about a character we all love. But there’s NO getting around some of the flat-out UGLINESS I’ve seen here. I really hope that with some hard work and care, Brad and some of his fellow mods can go in there and really weed some of that out of this garden he’s built here. Brad and the mods say they already do that… well, they need to dig a HELL of a lot deeper. But I hope they can succeed in the long run. I really do!
But I’m done here. I swear to God, I am never coming back to your site.
what were the spoilers Slott alluded to?
DCMarvelFanGuy, they had something like 10 copies of the hardcover. Unfortunately, it’s at my LCS’s Sidekick store, which is due for closure on February 12 and their discounts are escalating. They were typically 50% off all trades, but are bumping that up to 75% incrementaly til the store closes. I’m curious to see how many will be left. They have A LOT of BND stuff, but they have a lot of Batman Hush stuff, too.
Not this again….
@180 – You could say that about literally any comic book status quo ever created. You could say that about the marriage itself if you wanted. Everything is just a condition, everything is transitory, this is no element of any book that couldn’t be undone/re-done if the next writers/editors wanted to.
And yes, post 179 was terrifyingly uncalled for.
Slott needs a tombstone? You need a life, friend. Death threats are never called for. I feel profoundly sorry for you.
>Yes Fred, clearly I’m the one with the issue here…. I don’t attack this board, just the haters who continue to bitch about a storyline nearly 5 years old.<
A atoryline that is still going on. Until OMD is addressed, all BND is is a story, a story that will have an ending one day.
More like “what the hell happened to Marvel”
This would never have happened with a DeFalco, a Stenr, or even a frickin’ Mackie.
Slott needs a tombstone. Hack.
Wow. I’m happy I stopped coming here. :-/ What the hell happened to this site.
…I believe things may have been blown out of proportion a tad on both ends.
that being said, If Dan Slott would bring back DEMOGOBLIN, everything will be right in the world.
Thank God this is apparently over. I hope everyone learned something.
Now let’s put this thing to rest and move on.
~Lament~
BD, I agree with Dan Slott, he should never be front page news…especially about his comments on other boards. I also agree with you that professionals should be held to a higher standard in how they conduct themselves in public, whether it is online or in person at a ComicCon or wherever. The trolls should never be fed, no matter if they are the professional or the fan/poster/etc.
Love this site, but I am not surprised this post created such a sh**storm…
Okay people, lets not beat the dead horse. Moving on, nothing to see.
Didn’t I call it? No one wins and everyone ends up looking foolish. I hope we learned a leason here.
And I figured out Mr. Wacker’s “riddle”. If it isn’t trolling or flaming then what is it?
The answer hit me when I read this. All this reminded me of one thing: Congress. They don’t flame nor troll. They don’t call it that.
It’s a ‘heated discussion’. That’s the answer.
Now I wonder when the next one’s coming.
~Lament~
Slott’s obvious love for Spider-Man animates his work in the magazine, and even though I hate OMD (yes, I’ll use that word), and his writing sensibilities can become too jokey, I usually enjoy his issues. That’s the Dan Slott I like — the one who is still excited to be the writer of Spider-Man! The one whose reply to me above I actually appreciated and accepted, even if I don’t always agree with him.
But I wish he would lock Dark Slott in a closet and never let him out. You know Dark Slott — the one who can’t control his temper or his language. The one on whom Wacker is a bad influence, the Slott who can’t stop demeaning himself by chewing out some ignorant, potty-mouthed 17-kid-old kid on the Internet.
Sure, being the writer of ASM isn’t like being the President. But, pop culture wise, Dan Slott has been given the privilege to stand in a line that started with Stan Lee, and then included Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, David Micheline, and Roger Stern. I don’t know what those guys were like in private. But I plead with him to live up to the respectable, cheerful public standard that those guys set.
@ Whistler – Why not actually try to be kind to some of us? Dude, you’ll never understand us if you don’t try.
Sure you can come here and attack the “haters” but that won’t win you any friends regardless. Your not impressing anyone regardless of their stance.
Hopefully you won’t leave this site the same way you came in. Without any friends at all.
Hopefully you won’t have wasted ALL of your time “attacking the haters” like myself. (Yes I am a Delta.)
Hey maybe we don’t enjoy Spider-man the same (It’s OK to disagree) but we could have some REALLY awesome discussions about some back issues or other things.
I got through half and couldn’t read anymore. Anyone care to make an ebook?
Been busy at work but wanted to respond to a few poeple…here are some of Whistler’s points.
“This site is small and petty, the rest of the comics industry seems to be fine…”
Sorry you find our actions petty.
“!. Close both Delta and Zeta House, the joke has worn thin, hell it wasn’t funny by 2008.””
Delta and Zeta House are only parts of this website. I go months without stopping in either of them. No offense to either houses. You can easily not make it part of your board experience barring the trading card signatures.
“2. Stop letting posters use their sigs to randomly insult, Marvel, Joey Q etc, etc, it’s covert trolling and should not be encouraged.”
Can you give me an example of a sig? Of the ones I’ve seen I haven’t seen anything that I thought out of line. If you could bring one to my attention we could discuss it.
“3. Some posters post only to be negative. ban em and encourage other posters who WOULD otherwise post were it not for their presence.”
We can’t pick and choose who we ban. There is a three strike system with a few exceptions. We’ve banned some people some of whom are good friends. We’ve actually banned more Deltas than Zetas.
“4. Get rid of GB, epecially on the podcast. His recent inclusion on the rotation has stopped me enjoying it, and his presence here does more harm than good.”
The podcast has about seven regulars. Odds are there will be one or two that you may not like. If GB ain’t your guy then hopefully you can find some enjoyment from the other six members. It’s not the George Berryman show. He’s not going anymore and if you that means you’ll be going somewhere else all I can say is I hope you find a podcast more to your liking.
For everyone else, you may not like what Whistler has to say but imagine him as a dissatisfied Spidey reader. He doesn’t need to be dog piled for having a contrary opinion. You can debate him but like Slott, Wacker and BD there is no name calling.
And for those of you who say we shut down our detractors…quite a few people here have told Brad that they wished he hadn’t posted what he did. As long as they didn’t use the “c” word, they were not warned or banned. Believe it or not at the Crawlspace you can say “Brad I didn’t like this” without fear of retribution.
Dear Whistler, I’m going to do what I’m recommending Dan Slott do and I’m going to ignore the trolls.
@165, Paranoid much?
@Javi Trujillo
Man, I wish I could find a Spider-Man/Human Torch HC at my store. 🙁 50% off would be a plus as well.
Hey, “this” isn’t half-bad.
No, it’s all bad!
🙂
~Lament~
On the subject of shilling, one of my jobs was to help distribute a list of talking points to include in board posts (these lists usually went to interns). The more commoninstructions were:
1. Choose a user name that is not too obvious. Avoid real life self reference or anything that refers to the company, either directly or indirectly.
2. Always keep saying that ratings/public interest are high and rising. Question any numbers that disagree.
3. Emphasize how you prefer the current version to what has gone before. Try to give a specific example whenever possible.
4. Make at least one positive comment about the writing and/or the story. Be sure to give a specific example. Sound enthusiastic.
5. Make one positive comment about supporting or main cast.
6. Make at least one mildly critical comment every couple of posts, so as not to be too obvious.
Sound familiar? Frankly, I never liked this practice. When I mentioned that in passing, my supervisor simply shrugged and said, “Welcome to the business, kid.”
For a guy who claims he is done with the site, he sure has a habit of coming back and retorting. And to think, I ALMOST bought a Spidey/Human Torch hardcover at 50 % off this weekend. Why didn’t I? The bad taste in my mouth Slott’s online antics have engendered. I instead bought quite a few back issues of Detective Comics.
“I’m neither Wacker nor Slott, tho I do find it interesting that anyone with a negative opinion about this site is automatically suspected of being a Marvel employee : )”
For information’s sake, working in the media, I can tell you from first hand knowledge that it’s fairly standard practice when dealing with boards to load them with favorable comments whenever possible. For example, several members of the writing staff where I worked had several accounts apiece from which they posed as members of the public, posting comments on various boards favorable to our interests, etc. It’s one of those rather thankless jobs that sometimes get handed out to interns.
Those who do this are called “shills”, fellow trivia buffs.
Yes Fred, clearly I’m the one with the issue here…. I don’t attack this board, just the haters who continue to bitch about a storyline nearly 5 years old.
“I wonder which one #156 is: Mr. Slott or Mr. Whacker?”
Unfortunately Whistler is his own man. He’s been attacking the board for quite some time. He feels if we dare criticize anything related to Marvel or Spiderman, its that because we hate marvel or Spiderman.
Its sad but what can you do.
I’m neither Wacker nor Slott, tho I do find it interesting that anyone with a negative opinion about this site is automatically suspected of being a Marvel employee : )
And seriously? Pfft is the best anyone has to offer?
All I can say to #156 is if the rest of the comic industry is fine then why did we just see an ugly public dispute between Slott Wacker Waid and JMS. I’m not going to get in to the right and wrong here as in my opinion both sides are wrong in this whole thread but let’s not gloss over that we have seen this behavior between the pros in the industry as well and act like it just happened here and with fans.
I wonder which one #156 is: Mr. Slott or Mr. Whacker?
Seriously, I think it’s time to end this thread, BD. Dan and Steve and a few shills are just milking it and trolling it for all it’s worth and this exchange is pretty pointless at this point.
I’ve been staying out of this, but I just want to let Bertone know I really admire how he’s been handling this, and that he’s earned serious respect (not that he didn’t already have my respect, but this even puts an exclamation point on it.)
Also, @156, I’m sorry, but all I have to say is…Pffft.
No Brad, this site is small and petty, the rest of the comics industry seems to be fine…
What happened man? You had a great site here until you let Berryman start Delta House, after which you jut rolled out a red carpet to all the haters to join your site.
You asked what you could do about the negativity on this site?
!. Close both Delta and Zeta House, the joke has worn thin, hell it wasn’t funny by 2008.
2. Stop letting posters use their sigs to randomly insult, Marvel, Joey Q etc, etc, it’s covert trolling and should not be encouraged.
3. Some posters post only to be negative. ban em and encourage other posters who WOULD otherwise post were it not for their presence.
4. Get rid of GB, epecially on the podcast. His recent inclusion on the rotation has stopped me enjoying it, and his presence here does more harm than good.
Ask yourself why you are running this site Brad, is it because you are a Spidey fan, or because you are a flag waver for the haters?
Sorry Dan, Spidey would not stoop to bickering on the internet. And if he did “quip” it would be light hearted fun that while mocking the target still done in a way that disarms the argument.
You seriously have to learn to STOP. You gain NOTHING by continuing to argue with people on a message board! Why can’t you understand that it does not make the slightest bit of difference if you are right or wrong on any given point you make, you just look BAD by responding at all.
If you are willing to converse with fans online then stick to the positive or respectful criticisms and ignore the rest. It is the only way you can come off looking good. This tit-for-tad bickering on a message boards makes you look childish regardless of the validity of anything you say.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE STOP! I want to enjoy the books without them being stained by the bad behavior of those involved!
Betty would blow up someone’s apartment and then claim they didn’t love her.
Whoops:) Sorry about that Berton:)
No name calling. “Loon” included.
“While Steve Wacker is banned from this site, one of the people who is apparently ALLOWED to post here is someone who has had LEGAL ACTION taken against them for some of his psycho-fan behavior on another popular site.”
Do you have a point Dan? Because if you did not understand the difference, then you need professional help.
“It’s perfectly okay to post links here to articles that have been crafted and cleverly edited by the same wonderful people whom Rich Johnston had to out as a group of people who were trying to unjustly frame me as a cyber-stalker.”
Is that the same Rich, who is known for getting a great deal of his scoops wrong? The same Rich who has been called out for stealing other people’s news and pretending the its his own?
Dan, you are really grasping for straws here and is making yourself look like a bigger loon that you are.
