JMS, who hasn’t said much about Spider-Man since he left Marvel, recently posted a graph on his Facebook fan page and commented on how far the sales have fallen since he left “Amazing Spider-Man”. Stephen Wacker, current senior editor of the Spider-Man titles, had a rebuttal.
What are your thoughts? Please keep them respectful and no name calling to Wacker or JMS. We’d like to go through one of these controversies without banning anyone.
I think JMS was being a tad obnoxious with this post, but it looks more like a joke than anything else. I mean, can any of us honestly say we never took a potshot at someone on the Internet to get a laugh? I think Wheatcakes summed it up best: tongue in cheek. I’ve seen and read enough of JMS’ work to get an idea what his sense of humor’s like. This certainly didn’t seem a vicious mean-spirited Take That.
I put this onus on Wacker. His initial post sounds like a massive over-reaction. I think JMS touched a nerve. And besides, I’ve read Wacker’s past comments. He isn’t exactly one I would want to hear spout a lecture about class. Someone like DeFalco or the Man himself, yeah – but not Wacker.
AND concentrate, I meant
A suggestion to both sides in this silly little drama: Stop behave like kids on Internet on concentrate on what you’re good at.
Jokes, fun, and bad sales sure don’t mix as well as they should :p
Since 31 said it:
My top Spider-Man writers
1- Tom Defalco
2- Stan Lee
3- Dan Slott
4- J.M.S (and his villains)
5- Peter David
6- Roger Stern
7- Marv Wolfman
8- Gerry Conway (due his work in the late 80s and early 90s, his earlier work was pretty average save a few stories)
9- David Michellline
10- Len Wein
11- Ann Nocentie
@Wheatcakes: I love that story as well
#41: I’m also something of a Sins Past apologist. JR has defended it on spideykicksbutt as well.
In my opinion it was a bad idea because what it was messing with was too old. But, it was told very well, and it didn’t strike me as implausible.
Question to Kevin: didn’t you once mention in the podcast how Wacker once tweeted after JMS left wonder woman, “well now I’m interested in wonder woman again”?
Funny how he’s now pulling the class card.
As I long time reader of Spider-Man, it would have been much easier to have 40 years of continuity undone than to have Peter and MJ make a deal with the devil (Mephisto, whatever). I JJ Abrahms has positioned Star Trek in a great place by undoing everything from TOS on.
From JMS to Wacker: “At NO point did I engage in the kind of attacking, spiteful, mean-spirited characterization you did above. It’s unfortunate that one of Marvel’s editors comports himself in this fashion, but it happens.”
Man, that sounds oddly familiar. 8)
