Upper Deck is tearing up some classic comics to make some new trading cards. Granted these comics are in poor shape, but is this a good idea?

This… is just an appalling act of desecration. Words fail me.
What Upper Deck is doing is the antithesis of ‘comic preservation’, so for people to support this directly or indirectly is wrong, imo. These books ARE meant to read and enjoyed. They shouldn’t be destroyed, regardless of their condition. This process is lining the pockets of Upper Deck and card dealers who may be unaware of the actual process. What this also does is reduce the already minimal quantity of the Silver Age market, and will cause the current values of these classic books to skyrocket even more.
The main reason that these guys aren’t using reprints of old comics is due to the fact that if they were to use reprints, then they would not be able to say that these cards are made from ORIGINAL copies…which I’d assume is their biggest selling point…
I actually liked this video a lot, and i think the card making is a cool idea, nice post BD. Personally, I’m not into card collecting but i can imagine a market for this, especially if the books have a very low value. I own a few high value CGC copies of books, so i’m all for comic preservation, but i’d say that 80% of my Spidey comics have a low value and/or would be considered ‘reading’ copies (since they were!) to most collectors…b/c of that i’ve considered getting my collection bound for more convenient storage and reading…which may seem like heresy to some collectors… but the books are for reading and enjoying in any way possible, even if that means cutting a few pages from the books to hang on your wall…imo
I don’t understand why they can’t just use panels from a reprint like Masterworks or rip it off the ASM 40 years dvd?
Wow…as if we needed any more evidence that Marvel no longer cares about history or continuity. They’re LITERALLY destroying Stan Lee’s creations.
And no, I don’t care that they’re in “terrible condition”. Some of these comics have been around for almost half a century, and are probably older than almost all of us…Even JR! (JK!) They should be framed on a wall somewhere, not being cut up and turned into collectible cards that probably won’t even be remembered years from now.
Mere words cannot even begin to express how disgusted I am right now.
Watching them cut that issue of ASM 2 made me feel like my soul was dying
This is just stupid.
Tards
Sounds like a great idea…..if you happen to own (alreay highly valuable) copies of these books…..NOT!
But can’t Upper Deck just use a facsimile of the panel for the card template? Or would that just make too much sense?
So they’re destroying comics to make (potentially) valuable cards? That’s pretty much the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Hell, I’m pretty sure you could get enough for even a “terrible” copy of ASM #2 to make it worth selling.
