New game! Spider-Man: Edge of Time

Good news everybody! Today is Major League Baseball’s Opening Day. But to make it even better, Marvel and Activision have announced their next swingin’ Spidey game, “Spider-Man: Edge of Time.” Developed by Beenox, the guys behind Shattered Dimensions, the new game is due out this fall and will let players control only two dimensions this time, the Amazing universe (hopefully voiced again by NPH) and the 2099 universe. 2099 scribe, Peter David, is handling the story which focuses on the dual Spideys mission to fix their timelines. For the official word from Marvel, check here.

So exciting.

  1. Howdy are using WordPress for your blog platform? I’m new to the blog world but I’m trying to get started and set up my own. Silver Picture Frames. Do you need any html coding knowledge to make your own blog? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  2. Madame Web turned me off to playing the S.D. I hope this will not have her in it. That, and other issues.. I heard S.D froze and had bugs in the software

  3. but i have such high hopes for this game. they picked the best and most interesting dimensions of the previous one and i hope they will develop them even further this time and with a superb writer like Peter David (who also created the spidey 2099 universe) i believe at least story-wise the game wont go wrong.

  4. @Brian——I liked FoF. I got every achievement in the game. However, just because I liked it, doesn’t mean it was a great Spidey game. I was kind of hoping we’d see some other dimensions that were seen in the opening cutscene of Shattered Dimensions. It might’ve been fun to play as Spider-Ham LOL

  5. Oh, and BTW, Styleshift…If you’re talking about the 2-D side-scrolling beat-em-up Web of Shadows game for PS2, I do know about it…I only WISH I didn’t!
Since Web of Shadows came out before I got my PS3, I rented the PS2 version for 5 days…
I returned it after only 1, and got the remaining days credited back to my account.

Does THAT tell you how bad that stink-bomb was???

  6. I have to agree with Styleshift…This game seems ENTIRELY too rushed. And since it’s being developed by the same company that brought us Shattered Dimensions, (which was cool from a Spider-Fan’s perspective, but EXTREMELY lackluster from a gamer’s perspective, IMO) I’m dreading this even more.

Although Brian DOES raise a good point in that by limiting it to two dimensions, they may be able to improve on some of the things I didn’t like about SD (ie: controls and glitches)

This one’s gonna be a rental for me. If it surprises me, I might buy it when it goes down in price.
Sorry, Spidey, but my video game money this fall is already reserved for Arkham City and Uncharted 3! 😉

  7. @ Brian.
Oh I merely misunderstood what you were saying.

They’ve done that for the different consoles in the past but not to THAT level.
Only because of hardware limitation. (Like the 2d side scroller beat em up Web of Shadows that no one knows about) lol.

  8. Guys, I think PAD’s only writing the plot and not the dialogue. That’s all Dan Slott did for Shattered Dimensions, apparently.

Keaton for Amazing and Barnes or NPH for 2099!

  9. Thanks, the main thing I remember from the first game was that the Xbox had the exclusive Kraven level so thats what started my Xbox loyalties. I guess I do kind of remember that one not being sandboxy. I didn’t count Friend or Foe as a main Spidey title because it just looked awful and I never touched it. Was I wrong on that assumption. Did anybody like that game?

  10. This time Spider-Man 2099 is not an alternate dimension, he’s what PAD started him to be, from the same world, a future with a different Spider-Man, I support that

@Brian: 2002 had the first movie game, not a sandbox, sandbox started since 2004 with Spidey 2
Ultimate had Beenox only porting it to PC, not in development, same goes for SM3 & FoF

  11. You had a good game engine with Web of Shadows… they should have…

… well, they should get away from Activision and Kotick for starters, then take that and build on it.

  12. I’m not sure what you mean Styleshift… What I’m saying is there should be two different games… an action/adventure game… and then the free roaming/sandbox game. Two very different game genres. I’m going to go back to 2002 and the first Spider-Man game real quick: Spider-Man The Movie (2002) Treyach, Level based action game; Spider-Man 2 The Game (2004) Treyach, action sandbox game; Ultimate Spider-Man (2005) Treyarch (and Beenox surprisingly), action beat ’em up; Spider-Man 3 The Game (2007) Treyarch, action sandbox; Web of Shadows (2008) Treyarch, apparently an action-adventure beat ’em up but really sandboxy, and Shattered Dimensions (2010) Beenox, action adventure platformer.

So while some of the game genres are classified as action beat ’em ups but the only true action adventure platformer would be Shattered Dimensions… the majority of Spideys main games from 2002 to 2008 had a heavy Sandbox style of play, which a lot of people like. They were all pretty much handled by Treyarch as well, so Treyarch has no problem doing the sandbox free roam webswingin ad naseum apparently.

What I was saying was that I would like to see more focus on the action adventure like in Shattered Dimensions. They should let Beenox handle a game in that style, and if they still want to have a free roam open world Spidey let Treyarch handle that game, and then they can alternate years they release a game. Just my thoughts.

  13. Brian, Activision HAS been developing Spider-man games that way since Spider-man 3. Spider-man: Web of Shadows was the last game to do that and they failed miserably each time.
One game always outshines the other, or both end up sucking.

What Activision needs to do is give their developers more time instead of pushing a Spider-man game out the door year after year.
(Or attaching it to a movie release.)

  14. Oy. This fall means this will be a cash cow.
Less than 1 year is not NEARLY enough time to develop games for this generation of consoles.

I’m very glad that PAD is attached to this though.
Hopefully that means that Spidey 2099 will actually be in character.

My money is on Keaton voicing Amazing Spidey. He has the best delivery and I’m not sure if NPH would really have the time to keep returning to the role.
NPH would make a better 2099 Spidey. He has a more “mature and sophisticated” tone to his voice that 2099 needs.

Love Dan but he played the role way too silly.

  15. AWESOME. Spidey 2 on PS2 is meh fave. But this seems really great. I hope they don’t go all dramatic on us. When I here Edge of Time I think of some overindulgent anime sheesh.

  16. David writing and Keaton voicing are pluses. However, this kinda feels like a slight rehash of Shattered Dimensions-here’s hoping that story and gameplay nip it in the bud.

  17. I disagree, I think trimming it down and only focusing on two dimensions will give them time to improve upon the things that worked instead of trying to cram as much in as possible. I would prefer it just focusing on one dimension frankly, but as long as it fits the story and works I have no problem with it.

I like Keaton too, I’d rather him be the 2099 voice though and have Neil Patrick Harris come back for Amazing. I thought he did a pretty good job in SD.

  18. Hmm, I don´t know. There only being two dimensions makes me worried that it will feel rushed. Maybe they will have an in-game explanation for it. The plot does sound like it could work. They´ll just have to make up for it with more villains.

  19. I never got around to playing shattered dimensions, but I might give this one a shot a long with arkham city when those comes out, I really need to start using my PS3 for games again and not just DVD’s, just wish video games weren’t so expensive these days.

Still Peter David writing and Josh Keaton voice acting are two plusus. Hey Maybe Keatons gonna be the regular spidey voice actor for the video games now, that would be sweet.

  20. NIce, if they bring back the free-falling 2099 moments along with the time stopping moments from Shattered Dimensions, then this game is truly bound to be even more awesome than ever. 😀

  21. You know what would be a cool idea for Activision to try, approaching it like their Call of Duty series. Have two different developing companies work on two different Spider-Man games. One could focus on the freeroam/sandbox style of play that some people prefer… and the other game can be more of an action/adventure game. That way they could alternate a different game a year and it would give each development house an extra year to work on their respective game. That would definitely flood the Spider-Man gaming world, but I won’t complain as long as they were decent, fun games.

  22. I really can’t muster up any genuine enthusiasm for this project. Shattered Dimensions was lackluster in my opinion.

Some great voice talent and a good strong concept, but executed poorly.

I say go back to the freerom/sandbox format.

  23. Of course, you gotta wonder who is Keaton voicing here. My money is on Amazing Spidey. I have no complaints if that’s the case.

Gilvezan coming back for 2099, maybe?

  24. Best Spidey game in story perhaps, hope it would be one of the best in gameplay with the least technical difficulties

  25. Peter David is writing this and Josh Keaton is coming back? then this game has the potential to be the best spidey game ever!
best Spidey-related news I have got in a long time. i am looking forward to this
