Marvel has announced a new ongoing Venom series to debut in March 2011. The book will be written by Rick Remender and drawn by Tony Moore, the creative team behind the recent Frankencastle.
Following in the (dubious) tradition of the 90s, this Venom will be on the side of the good guys rather than being a villain — Venom will be a government operative in this incarnation, and Remender promises that the host will be a familiar character.
“Due to the volatile nature of Project Venom, the Pentagon has come in and flagged some of my answers for security concerns,” prefaces the writer. “[redacted], the enhanced, black ops agent Venom, is charged with chasing a trail across the globe to uncover the man behind a plot to sell the world’s dictators and terrorists weaponized [redacted], all while juggling a double life, and a growing addiction to a symbiote that is constantly trying to take him over.
“[The set-up for VENOM] originated with [AMAZING SPIDER-MAN writer Dan] Slott and [editor Steve] Wacker. Once they told me the basic concept, and who the main character would be, I was sold. International adventures of 00Venom, c’mon, that’s good comic booking. Dan and I worked up a few ideas for supporting cast and rules for Venom and both went off to write. The initial set up issue will be by Dan in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #654.1 [and] you won’t want to miss that. Then the story picks up in VENOM #1.”

Im very interested in this project. It will be entertaining the discover the new ins and outs of this character, and how he stacks up to the previous incarnations.
He’s got big shoes to fill and I’m betting readers have high expectations.
Yeah, I’m guessing this will be somehow related more to thunderbolts than spidey.
Is it necessarily a Spidey supporting character? If not, I’d guess John Walker.

Called Flash 2 months ago on the MB episode! (Though I was hoping for George’s answer: A BULLET TO THE HEAD!) Way to go Marvel, there goes all sympathy/character development this character has. The symbiote will probably allow him to walk again, and I think as Brad pointed out, it looks like Venom is an amputee.

@BD–Yeah, I was thinking the exact same thing. Also, Flash in comparison to John Jameson, is a much more recognizable supporting character in Spider-Man and thus has the potential impact is greater. And you got the whole angle of that, apparently, the new Venom is danger of becoming addicted to the symbiote, considering that Flash would have both the powers of his long-time idol AND be able to walk with the Venom symbiote, that in itself would be very tempting for him.
Nothing new or exciting here.
If it is Flash that’s at least doing something with the character. Still, I’m not paying $3.99 a month for a Flash Thompson book.
After the earlier thread this week Wacker did a good job of making me not want to buy any more Marvel. Hope his word games and “humor” were worth it for him because the company is one number closer to those record lows on ASM.

My money is on Flash being Venom. Bertone talked to Slott about it at San Diego and he changed the subject real quick when Bertone started putting it together. Also look at Venom’s right leg in that pic. Doesn’t look like a foot to me.
I would normally be VERY interested in this. A Venom freaking ongoing. HELL YEAH!
But it all depends on who is editing the series? If its Wacker I’m going to pass. Gone off him BIG TIME!! (gettit?)
However, the art looks cool and Remender is a bloody genuis writer. Loved his Punisher run. I’ll have to see who is editing the series before I decide to pick it up or not.
@Two-Bit Specialist: I think it would be lousy for both, actually. Jameson has already been “transformed” multiple times (Man-Wolf, celestial form), and Flash has a lot of untapped potential as he currently stands.

@Gerard – I would mind either one at all in the role. I would love to see Flash as Venom, but I hope he doesn’t end up as a cannibalistic maniac. Hopefully we’ll see something like what happened to Normie Osborn in MC2 Spider-girl.
Frankencastle was pretty controversial, but I thought it was good. The Venom ongoing will probably be too, but I think Remender can pull it off.
I’m calling either Flash Thompson or John Jameson for this one. Both have been seen already in Big Time, and both would clearly fit into the mold that Remender described.
