A new animated series based on Ultimate Spider-Man is set to debut in the fall of 2011 on Disney XD, it was announced today. Unfortunately for fans of The Spectacular Spider-Man, this is probably the end of the road for the critically-acclaimed show.

Rollman, President of Marvel Animation: “Ultimate Spider-Man will be a unique journey exploring our favorite web-slinger as he teams up with other fan favorite Marvel Super Heroes in never before seen stories with a new life filled with great challenges, new friends, intense action and character growth.”

I would love if they could bring the spiderman animated series from the 90s back and continue with season 6. I really hate the new onces, and I have seen a few episodes from the new spidy cartoons THEY ALL SUX badly compared to spidy from the 90s!!!

the art designs for spectacular spider-man were really just terrible. I didnt even really like the show. I grew up with Spider-Man TAS 90s. And now i will be growing up with Ultimate Spider-Man The Animated Series as well!! ^^

I really liked The Spectacular Spider-Man animated series because it was a kid’s cartoon with elements from the comics, reminded me of the movies, and had a lot more fighting action than other series before it. The only thing is that I believe Ultimate Spider-Man will be somewhat BETTER because Mary Jane Watson will be Peter Parker’s true soulmate unlike Gwen Stacy and Felicia Hardy; they have everything including science in common plus the kinda good-looking Parker has the most beautiful redhead ever. One Note: I miss the New Spider-Man computer generated animated-series from 2002 and 2003 because that was similar to Ultimate Spider-Man already but it took place after the first Spider-Man movie.

I’m pissed about SSM, but I do agree with you. We don’t know how the show will turn out yet. I remember alot of people hating on Spectacular before it aired.
While I’m not happy about SSM, I’m looking forward to this.
Either on a podcast or another media outlet, I think I heard that the cast has moved on to other projects.

I think this comes down more to licensing and rights issues than anything else. Sony gave up their rights to the show, and the production team likely had other commitments to Sony projects. Let’s not trash this new show before it’s even produced. We may fall in love with this show once we see it.
I feel bad that MTV didn’t give its Spider-Man cartoon a better chance at survival, but Spectacular Spider-Man turned out to be a success. Give Pete’s a chance!
Yay, another Spider-man show cancelled premuturely. I’m interested in a USM cartoon, but come on, SSM was excellent. Why throw that out the window for something that probably won’t be as good?

I think the writings been on the wall since Sony announced the Spider-Man reboot movie that they said was going to be close to Ultimate Spider-Man comics. Marvel was bound to try and capitalise on it be making something that’s Ultimate Spider-Man related and put it out close to the film release date.
Anyway I wish Greg Weisman, Vic Cook, and the rest of the awesome people that worked on SSM the best and I’m sorry they had to find out this way. It’s a real kick in the teeth to them.
Why? why cancel one show to start another. why not just put effort into the first…….very similar premises anyway.
Good point, Joseph. In fact, speaking of the comics/movie angle Marvel’s never grasps what Warner/DC understands.
JGC, It definitely does make sense to have an ultimate tv series along with an ultimate movie, but it just never seemed necessary. For example, btas was inspired by tim burtons movies but was never in continuity with it. They had iron man armored adventures along with the iron man movie.
Makes sense. If the new Spider-Man movie is going to be based on the Ultimate Universe, then why not have a new cartoon that does the same?
Afterall, the movie and cartoons are for kids anyways.
There is so much I want to say about this situation but I will start with the negative: first offthis has been my biggest fear since disney’s acquisitin of marvel that spec spidey would meet it’s end. I feel like once again Disney throws spidey fans the middle finger we all know that since Disney acquired TAS that a DVD box set has yet to materialize. This is the first mistake in what I fear may be a long line DISNEY mistakes. TSSM was the perfect animated show and might have been the best iterration of the spider-man character in all of his screen appearances. It even surpassed what is currently being printed in the comics. I also wish mr Greg weissman my deepest apologies he and his staff gave us a phenominal product and I thank him for doing so. Josh was born to be spidey’s voice it’s a damn shame he’s gone
I do however want to leave on something positive. There was a time where I stopped reading comics as a whole football, rnb band, and girls took up all my time but in my junior yr ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN brought me back to comics as a whole and it wouldnbe kinda cool to see how they would animate in bagleys style and some of the great USM plots.
I’M STILL ANGRY BUT I WANNA TRY TO SEE AN UPSIDE. I feel like persians gonna read my post and try to rip me a new one now though lol.
Would it be too hopeful to think that (for the new seasons) they are changing the name of the show from “Spectacular” to “Ultimate”….? An eensy-weensy bit too much? .. Ok I give up, no hope >_<

Ultimate spiderman is my favorite comic series ever but spectacular spiderman soooo awesome! why would they want to reboot something good? this goes for the movie series 2!
I guess this will be a modern spiderman and his amazing friends. I was actually excited at first until i realized they will probably focus more on team ups (like brave and the bold). Even though the brave and the bold is still an entertaining show, its broad appeal to all ages prevents me from liking it as much as the dcau. Spec spidey had a such a great plot driven storyline(while balancing action) that i really enjoyed it, almost as much as the dcau. I’d hate to be the people who are making this show. The reaction will either be like btas and the batman OR the batman and batman brave and the bold (the latter being more accepted BUT with a broad audience appeal).
Being realistic I can’t see how they will continue this cartoon and Spectacular. Maybe it’s not officially canned but how can you not see the writing on the wall?
It’s too bad really. Spectacular was the best Spider-Man cartoon ever – hell the best Marvel cartoon ever. Furthermore Greg Weisman is a bajillion times smarter than the usual Marvel cartoon crew of Rollman, Kyle and Yost who sometimes I get the feeling that they don’t know what they are doing when it comes to cartoons (Planet Hulk is a RARE exception). Spider-Man in their hands does not make me a happy camper.

With the Disney buyout I thought we might get a Marvel animated universe to rival the DC animated universe. But Ultimatizing it? I’ll pass, cause it’s fail. The DCAU was so popular because it was so instantly familiar and true to its roots. An Ultimatized cartoon will just feel like yet another contrived “reimaginging” – which is what the Ultimate Universe always was anyway.
On the bright side, this will save me from spending hundreds of dollars on the BluRay season set releases!

Remember folks, there hasn’t been an official statement with regards to Spectacular Spider-Man — that was pure conjecture on my part. Newsarama claims that it’s been dead for months, but that’s factually incorrect.
What a terrible mistake! Spectacular Spider-man was the best take of the character that I’ve ever seen. What’s wrong with these people? Why do they keep doing this? They are now 3 for 3. The comics, the movies, and now the cartoon. What ever happened to ” don’t fix what isn’t broken”?????
