BREAKING NEWS: Spider-Man’s New Director says it’s a dream come true.

Apperantly there is a blog called Heat Vision that reports this:

Marc Webb has finalized a deal to helm the new “Spider-Man” movie for Columbia.

The studio last week scrapped the fourth installment of the web-slinging hero under director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire and decided to reboot and scale-down the franchise.

Webb, who has options on two sequels, will now tackle a Jamie Vanderbilt script that sees a “Spider-Man” movie that will look and feel very different from the big movies that went before it.

Who is Mark Webb? He recently directed 500 Days of Summer. It seems he’s a fan, given this quote:

Webb said, “This is a dream come true and I couldn’t be more aware of the challenge, responsibility, or opportunity. Sam Rami’s virtuoso rendering of Spider-Man is a humbling precedent to follow and build upon.  The first three films are beloved for good reason.  But I think the Spider-Man mythology transcends not only generations but directors as well.  I am signing on not to ‘take over’ from Sam.  That would be impossible.  Not to mention arrogant.  I’m here because there’s an opportunity for ideas, stories, and histories that will add a new dimension, canvas, and creative voice to Spider-Man.”

New Demension? You have a good foundation, but will they continue it? (That foundation being the Origin). Will we see Harry, Gwen, Peter and MJ? There is still a lot of questions, but we won’t know for awhile. Maybe Brad can get the guy on sometime…

  1. gotta love the fact that there is a random dance scene right in the middle of 500 days of summer. I bet the producers over at sony loved that they found another guy who can sqeeze peter parker into another saturday night fever routine that’s absolute rubbish. However I did enjoy everything else about the movie and as long as Webb sticks closer to the origin and costumes than raimi did we’re set!

  2. @Scooter

Not saying he can’t deliver, just my expectations are not as high as someone that has shown some chops somewhere else. For example, if the new director was let’s say, someone from PIXAR, (I know, I know that won’t happen with it being Sony, just saying…). Scooter, I agree he has something to prove, but at the same time, we know little about this guy to get too excited or even disappointed…

Just like when Spider-Man 1 came out..I’ll wait and see.

  3. I also (really) like 500 Days but I’ve been reading that this reboot vision will/may focus more on teen angst than fighting/action. I know this is a strong part of Peter/Spidey’s core character but too much in this case may not be a good thing.

  4. My girlfriend said she liked 500 Days of Summer. Thank goodness she didn’t drag me to see it though. 😛 Not my kind of flick but I’m sure I’ll catch it on Cable at some point.

Still feel it’s too soon for a reboot and even if they had to replace Raimi via disagreements they didn’t have to reboot the series this fast.

Anyway here’s hoping he gets Web-Shooters, Flash has blonde hair, Spider-Man’s really funny and he doesn’t take his mask off every five seconds.

Say, can we have a super-hero movie where the main character keeps their secret identity? Because someone figures out their identity in EVERY MOVIE. Every Batman movie from the first Tim Burton flick to Dark Knight Returns, every Spider-Man movie, Daredevil, Iron Man and hell even stuff like The Spirit and hell Dark Man and Billy Zane Phantom can’t keep their Secret Identities either! There’s tons more examples but you get the idea.

You know whose identity no one ever figures out in the movies? SUPERMAN. Even when Lois found out in Superman 2 he was able to wipe her memories away with a magic kiss!

So Hollywood Super-Heroes stop wearing masks. Joint never works. Glasses and a different haircut is where it’s at! JUST SAYIN’…

  5. @ Spiderdad & Noctis –
The amount of work under his belt means nothing. David Yates who directed the last 2 Harry Potter films and is finishing the series up had never directed a movie before only TV documentaries. He had something to prove and ended up doing a better job than 2 of the other 3 directors in the series. Webb has just been handed the opportunity of a lifetime. He has something to prove as well and this will make or break his career. I would bet on him over a more established director to who this is “just another movie” any day.

  6. Ditto what Spider-Dad said. Seeing as the franchise would apparently get “scaled-down”, I won’t be surprised (nor would I particularly mind it) if Webb followed a more “Slice of Peter Parker’s Life” character development focus (NEED QUIPPAGE! GOOD, SWEET, BURNING QUIPPAGE! I MEAN…REALLY…IS THAT SO MUCH TO ASK?) rather than the smash-&-bash battles and brawls from the Raimi run.

  7. Not expecting much from a director that has only one film under his belt and it had no major CGI components. My Hollywood sense is tingling and telling me the next Spider-Man film will not make it out in 2012….

  8. Thanks to Zack for posting this on the front page. I touched it up by posting a picture of Webb. Yes, I’m going to e-mail him and see if he’d like to talk Spidey on a future podcast in 2010.

  9. My concern is James Vanderbilt is writing the script. Was his script for Spider-Man 4 complete crap or does Raimi not know what a good story is? I guess we will see.

  10. Webb just said he’s a huge fan of Ultimate Spider-Man in a video interview with MTV yesterday. I just love the irony of Mark Webb directing Spider-Man.

  11. 500 days was my fav movie (a surprise gem) this year…
He did a good job with telling the protagonist’s story (in a jumbled fashion) and hopefully the same follows for Peter Parker…

  12. mixed feelings. i saw the beginning of 500 days of summ but turned it off because I was too bored :/. Its the relationship and emo stuff that kinda bored me and I felt that it made the spiderman films drag at times. But back to 500 days.. I would still have continued watching 500 days of summer if it wasnt so slow and purely about the guys relationship because I thought the cinematography and and dialogue was pretty good.

  13. 500 days of summer was a good movie and i’m very interested in what Webb can bring to our favorite webhead…

  14. I recommend Webb references either Ultimate Spider-Man (first volume) and/or Spectacular Spider-Man The Animated Series if they’re going the high school route. Which I think may be a good move.

  15. ..wait, is it 500 Days of summer? Cause that’s all I’m finding. And that looks like an ok flick, I could watch it.

  16. Had to google ‘300 Days of Summer’ cause I hadn’t heard of it before. Not too sure yet, we’ll see. Can only hope for the best from here on out… at least we can probably say goodbye to the power-ranger goblin. heh
