The Commentary
For a once and done this was a pretty solid issue. Fred Van Lente brought back an older Spider-Man villain, did the usual “make him more dangerous thing” and even added a dose of crazy to the mix. It was a good read from start to finish and definitely had my attention. Siqueira and Sanos’ art was exceptionally good throughout the book and I really like their take on Spider-Man. All in all a satisfying read that was well worth the three bucks it cost to buy.
…
Oh, you wanted more than that in a review?
In all honesty I don’t have much to say about this issue. It was good. I liked it. I liked the depth Van Lente brought to the Russian gangsters. I liked his voice for Spider-Man. I liked the fact that he zigged and I zagged when it came to the Spot’s note. I really wasn’t expecting all that much since this is the first issue after a major story arc but Van Lente and crew certainly brought their A game to the party.
Sometimes there just isn’t a whole lot to say about a comic.
The Final Analysis
Solid writing. Good art. A few Batman jokes that made me chuckle. This issue had everything a once and done should have. You didn’t really have to know a whole lot about the Spot coming in to get what was going on thanks to a handy first page catch up and some good exposition. The action was intense, the plot moved along at a good clip and the Boris and Natasha jokes were good.
I hate to sound like Forrest Gump but that’s really all I have to say about that.
4 out of 5 webheads.
I know how he did it!
He teleported? 😀
He did, but then somehow Spot got better, appeared in the Wolverine story “Enemy of the State” by Millar, got killed AGAIN, got resurrected by the Hand, then killed by Wolverine again.
He then popped up in Modok’s 11, a pretty good mini-series, can’t recall if they explained how he beat death ( twice!) tho.
Does it address how the Spot got better? He died a few years ago. I think Tombstone killed him in a Tangled Web issue.
Anyone has to be better than Zeb Wells.
The people that really know how to write Spidey know that this is a story about an everday guy (Pete) who just happens to have super powers, not a guy who battles thugs all the time and just happens to have a private life.
Pete is a family man. He is loyal to family and friends. He has villains who we like to get to know.
A good story is not just one slugfest after another.
thanks for the podcasts,
Eddie
You forgot to mention the bit where Spider-Man punches himself in the face!
