Podcast 61: Feb 2009 pt 2: What did you think?

Postby BD » Sat Feb 21, 2009 5:19 pm

Gang the 2nd show is now online, what did you think?

The opening music is Hero/ Heroine by Boys like Girls. Thanks to Spider-Girl for the suggestion, I dig the song.

Not bad considering I didn't actually read any of the issues that were reviewed. I thoroughly enjoyed it and listened all the way to the end. Good job guys!

I must have missed that in editing it. Did I drop the F bomb?

No, you gave a comic an F grade. Never thought I'd see the day.

Yeah, I guess I gave it an "F" because Spidey wasn't in it. I'm probablly rank it higher if he at least popped his head in the story. And it was a Dan Slott story, I guess it proves that Bacchelo's art really isn't my thing.

Meh, I know you like him but I've always thought Slott was an overrated writer. I haven't read this particular issue or the Molten Man story, but all his other Spider-Man stuff puts him squarely in the second tier in my book.

I think Bachalo just has a style that doesn't work well for super hero stuff. His Death miniseries with Neil Gaiman looked great, and I think it was mostly because the story suited his style.

Pretty sure Brad gave the SI spidey series an F too CC, for the same reasons.

Enjoyed the show gang, and Brad this is like the second or third F you've given something as far as the podcasts are concerned. I remember you hated Secter Invasion Spider-Man and gave an F to that, and probably the Jackpot reveal too.

But you guys were all in top form, two thumbs up from me.

Man, you guys really hate Bacchalo, huh? Personally I like him, I just don't think he should be doing ASM. I'm undecided on Antivenom. It's like they took Venom from the 90s and got him to make a little more sense. The original Venom was all 'protect the innocents' while being inherently destructive at the same time. Venom was the kind of guy that would blow up an abortion clinic with a doctor and three nurses inside and refer to himself as 'pro life'. Brock as Antivenom could potentially be more than just a nutjob. The problem with the character as it stands is that if they have a plan to use him in an intersting way, they aren't letting on. His appearances have been stale and cliched. You have to wonder, if a writer like Dan Slott can't get much out of the character is there really much there?

I liked it as usual. now I'm torn as to wither I want to buy spider-man extra 2. the wolverine story seems like it would be good, but the anti-venom story.....doesn't, and I'm a fan of anti-venom lol.

the only point of contention I had with any of the reviews was with that everyone had a problem with Harry's reaction to spidey showing up in new jersey. This really didn't annoy me. that is if i'm right in assuming something is keeping everyone from remembering who spidey is, not just made them forgot but keeping them from remembering. If for Harry peter being spidey isn't an option. then pete calling up spidey isn't that far fetched.....of course if i'm wrong that yeah, it's bad writing....

Great podcast again...

However, I think the gang has mellowed a bit on it's grading. Although I do agree that the other issues ranged in the on the better side of the BND stories, I was surprised on how restrained everyone was on the Obama back story. I know it was filler, but it was not very good and giving it a C is really generous...I guess the F was being saved for the extra!

In February of 1977, I was not collecting Spider-Man every month yet, (that started with issue ASM #194), but whenever I saw Spider-Man on the spin rack at either the grocery store or K-Mart, I would pick one up with my allowance. I missed out on ASM #165 when it came out, but remember picking up Marvel Team-Up #49 and #50 a few months before, and a couple months later I picked up ASM#169 and Marvel Tales #78 and #79, (in a three pack baggie with a Marvel Two in One!).

BD, the day in Spider-Man history was fun. Maybe next time you can mix it up a bit, and have one from 5 years ago, one from 10 years, and another from 25 or sometihing.

...keep 'em going. I listen as I organize my collection and it keeps getting in better shape each month!

It's his storytelling -- he can't tell a story.
I don't mind his style but his layouts are often confusing.

Mellowed on the grading?
I think not -- I find them very hard to call every podcast.
I was surprised by some of the grades both bad and good.
Wasn't a big fan of the extra but they got all the other stuff spot on IMO.
