Yeah, he has really gone downhill since Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore. I loved those. :(

Happy Gilmore is one of the only two Sandler movies I actually like.

..the other is Mr Deeds.

"Whether Aunt May dies or not isn't the question. If she dies, does it mean anything beyond a brief sales spike because collectors/speculators think they'll be able to make a profit selling the book later? That is the question. Back when, Stan and company won our hearts and minds. I cared about Spider-Man and the other Marvel characters as though they were friends. I cared every time Aunt May got sick. That's what good creative work does."

-The Avengers: Sorry, but this movie looks like Transformers with Avengers
-Any movie with Adam Sandler or Kevin James
-The Three Stooges: I actually don't mind them making a modern Stooges film, but I laughed like...once at the trailer
-Any Nicholas Sparks movie
-Mirror, Mirror: It looks like a joke and I'd rather see the epic Snow White & the Huntsman

I'm sure there's more...

Michael Bay's Alien...whatever thing they will be, at least if I look at it as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie it very much will

But the good bits of Transformers, the action sequences.

Even if the movie was 2 and a half hours of fighting Loki and his army, I'd still enjoy it, just to see the Avengers on the big screen with one another.

I agree to some extent. It does have that Bay look about it at times which is definitely not a good thing. And with the running time just over 2 hours, the chance of it turning into a Transformers style romp is increased. Especially when the budget is $250 million plus.

This film needs great characterization. I want more then just a run of the mill popcorn film. If that is all we get then it"s a HUGE FAIL, no matter how entertaining.

And see that's my problem with the Marvel Studio films post 2008. Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America seemed to rush their characterzation so much. In Iron Man 2, Tony went from a loveable jerk to just a jerk, the villains were one dimensional, they didn't go far enough with the drinking even for a PG-13 film, and Pepper had no reason to want to be with him at the end. The big problem I had with Thor was that there's no way he would want to sacrifice himself for the human race after being on earth for like 2 days and the realtionship with Natalie Portman's character went from just flirting to trying to make it into some epic romance. In Cap, Red Skull was really cheesy, there was no chemistry between Steve and Peggy, and because Bucky had like what, 10 minutes of screen time? His death wasn't nearly as emotional as Marvel wanted it to be.

For me, Marvel has been screwing up these movies after the fantastic Iron Man and a fairly impressive Incredible Hulk. So I just don't trust them to pull it off in Avengers. I WANT them to and I will gladly eat crow and be surprised if they do it.

I would disagree with this. I really liked their relationship and it was one of the few that felt real to me. I liked how she had a slight affection for him when he was skinny and it continued throughout the film. When Steve said that he missed their dance at the end of the film, that was a real punch in the gut and I got a bit choked up at it.

I agree with you on Thor and Jane's relationship, as well as Bucky not getting enough development or screen time though.

Yeah, my wife was a sucker for the Cap Peggy romance, so I see that as a success. Thor and Jane was a bit rushed but maybe there will be a reason for that. Maybe it will turn out he really wants Syphe later.

I agree. Marvel Studio's have become happy making paint by number blockbusters. After the great Iron Man, it's been downhill. The Incredible Hulk was the first one to be ruined by micromanaging. Ed Norton has said that it was not the movie that he and Leterrier wanted to make. Why hire Norton, a guy known for brilliant characterization, only to reduce his role to nothing more then that of a typical action star? Stupidity.

I felt Cap was good, but not great. Standard blockbuster fare with no aspirations to rise above it. It was just there to set up the Avengers. Like you said, the characterizations felt rushed. The Howling Commandos were a mirrage in this. Bucky was definitely wasted and the emotional impact of his death was VOID. Red Skull was a bit over-the-top and very very thin. I don't mind the over-the-top pulpiness at times because it captured the spirit of that era in general. Red skull had his moments but his potential on screen was pretty much untapped. Real shame. He should have been memorable and he wasn't (Like Raimi's Goblin). The exact opposite of Loki who stole the show.

I liked Thor a bit more then you did, but understand your complaint. If it wasn't for Branagh's ability to cast and desire to bring heart to the film, it would have failed completely from the shortcomings you mentioned. I liked the chemistry between Hemsworth and Portman and felt the connection of their characters, so It didn't seem too extreme for Thor to take the action he did. It was definitely undercooked and they were skating on very thin ice.

I did read were Branagh said there were different cuts. The film being only 106 minutes makes me think that perhaps alot of the scenes on earth were cut short. Was this Branaugh's intent or studio interference? Did the earth stuff slow down the film in Marvel's eyes? I don't know. All we know for sure is Branaugh is not returning. Just like John Favraeu, Terrence Howard, Ed Norton and Joe Johnston are not returning. Patty Jenkins was in talks or hired to direct the sequel and then she's gone....

Marvel Studios does not seem to respect talent. And because of it they will not attract top talent to work on their properties. They micromanage projects and therefore destroy the working conditions for true inspiration to take place. They are the studio that know the characters even better then the creative talent on the film. As a result they seem over-protective and are only interested in fitting films into the mold that they see.

The Avengers is the test for me. I expected this film to be 150 minutes at least. If you really think about all that a film like this entails then 135 min. seems like slim pickings to me. I hope it's great, but I'm not a fan of Marvel Studios M.O. so I won't hold my breath. Disney should abolish Marvel Studio's and just use the Marvel guys as a sounding board and for accuracy. After that they should not be allowed to stick their hands in the pie. Just my opinion.
