Hello gang. Are there any people out there who bought comics in the 80s who invested in some of the many limited series that were released? I've been finding more and more of them in the dollar bins and have managed to buy complete sets of several of them which I didn't bother with in the 80s, and some of them are quite good.
A few of note are:
Kitty Pryde and Wolverine: This was like a coming of age story of Kitty, when her dad's shady bank dealings force her to grow up quick. She's also possessed by some ninja guy (it wasn't quite explained why he chose Kitty for this, but whatever), and Wolverine ends up getting in the mix to provide the muscle. I always wondered how Kitty went from the lame monikers of Sprite and Ariel to Shadowcat, so I was glad to finally read this one. I'd rate it a B.
Iceman: This was kind of a strange story, with Bobby Drake coming to terms with his fears and immaturity through his interaction with some cosmic being. It didn't suck, but it doesn't really grab you. I found myself getting a little annoyed with Bobby's whining, but he came around in the end. B- for a grade.
Marvel Contest of Champions: Ugh. This, I believe, was the first Marvel mini series ever, and it wasn't a good start. Basically one cosmic being, in an attempt to revive his friend, challenges Death by each picking a handful of Marvel heroes to fight four battles to find these pieces of gold hidden all over the world. I like a good super hero slugfest, but this one was very plodding to get through. A C- for this one.
Avengers vs. X-Men: This one started off well, with Magneto, in the middle of his trial, going on a trek to retrieve his ship. The Avengers try to return him to court, the Russian heroes try to arrest him for sinking a russian sub, and the X-Men fight to defend him. I enjoyed this quite a bit, but the jump from issue three to four is completely jarring, as it feels like a bunch of stuff happened between issues. At the beginning of issue 4, the X-Men are for some reason arrested, which isn't actually shown. Doing a little research, it appears that Roger Stern was pulled off the fourth issue so Tom DeFalco had to wrap it up, so the fourth issue kinda falls flat. I do recommend it though as a good read, an A for me on this one.
Does anyone else have any to share? I know there were two Hercules mini series, two Vision and Scarlet Witch series, a Nightcrawler series, a Falcon series, a Hawkeye series, and more. Are there any more out there that you'd recommend?
Thanks gang.
