Movies that will ROCK!!!!!!!!!

Postby FSUSpiderFan » Sun Mar 18, 2012 4:26 pm

So that I am balanced and no one can accuse me of being negative for starting the "Movies that will suck" thread, here is the thread for movies everyone thinks will be awesome. I'll start with the easy ones Avengers and Dark Knight Rises. In my mind there is a 90% chance these movies will be unbelievable. If they aren't I will be severely disappointed.

- Amazing Spider-Man - no brainer. Great cast and an intent to make a great movie.

- The Avengers - epic scale never seen before in the genre. The more I read from Whedon the more I'm sold. A bit leery of the running time. Should be at least 150 min ++ for a film like this, but it's only 135 minutes.....

- Prometheus - Loved Alien (the only good film in the series IMO) and the trailers look incredible.

- Moonrise Kingdom - Fan of Wes Anderson's recent work. This film seemingly has a simple plot about runaways but you know Anderson will bring a surrealist whimsy to the film.

EDIT: I will also add Life of Pi with Tobey Maguire and Irrfan Khan. I like Ang Lee's work and it is based on one of my favorite novels ever. Great coming of age adventure and the search for faith.

No surprise you would say that and I hope you are right.

Sounds like enough time to me, at least they didn't try to cut it down to under 2 hours.

The Avengers...That is all.

Seriously, that's the only movie I'm really looking forward to. I haven't seen anything else that has grabbed my attention enough to get excited about.

"Whether Aunt May dies or not isn't the question. If she dies, does it mean anything beyond a brief sales spike because collectors/speculators think they'll be able to make a profit selling the book later? That is the question. Back when, Stan and company won our hearts and minds. I cared about Spider-Man and the other Marvel characters as though they were friends. I cared every time Aunt May got sick. That's what good creative work does."

I hope so. The scope of this thing is massive. Quite a juggling act. Will Whedon have enough time to give proper depth to these characters while trying to balance screen time? Look at something like Independence Day. That thing was like 150 minutes and the characters stll felt a bit hollow to me. Obviously alot of that comes down to writing and direction, but 135 minutes seems to be pushing it. We'll see.

Considering all the character intros have been done in other movies, 135 mins seems like plenty. If anything, it seems a bit long to me, you'd think they'd want a movie like this to be tight and lean rather than rambling. But we'll see.

But you still have to develop the characterizations deeper, just as you would for one of them in a sequel. In this case within the team dynamic. You still have to approach it like nobody knows these characters to some degree. I don't think you can fly by on assumtions.

Look at box office grosses worldwide:

IM2 - $623 million
Iron Man - $585 million
Thor - $449 million
Cap -$369 million
TIH - $263 million

So obviously more people have seen some of these films more then others and I have no doubt that the Avengers will leave IM2 is the dust. Relasing these individual franchises goes hand in hand with expanding the fan base leading up to the Avengers. I don't think you can assume people will know all of them. I'm certainly not saying it can't be done in 135 minutes or that the film won't be good. But if you are going for more then just an Independence Day-type spectacle and really want the audience (beyond the hardcore fanbase) to invest in these characters, then 135 minutes makes Whedon's job harder IMO.

They certainly need to develop Hawkeye and more with Black Widow.

I think it's obviously more about the quality of the writing than length anyway. Iron Man 2 was 125 minutes, Captain America was 124 (this via Wikipedia), and one of those movies was watchable and the other one dragged like hell. But to be honest, two hours is plenty of time to introduce and work with a principle cast of that size, 135 minutes is plenty. This isn't going to be a serious moody epic like Dark Knight, this looks like a loud popcorn movie, and if you drag that on for too long, the effects and punching just lose all impact.

Although I do also think the Dark Knight could've stood to be a bit shorter, don't get me wrong.

The GI Joe 2 trailer got me a little jazzed. It was short and didn't show much, but sometimes less is more.

The Amazing Spider-Man: This would rock just for Andrew Garfield who is so much closer to my Peter Parker and wise cracking Spidey than Tobey ever was. But not just Garfield, the entire cast look great in their roles and the plot of the film really has me intrigued. I understand why fans of the Raimi/Maguire trilogy would be upset, but those films were so unsatisfying for me and I really believe this film can deliver the goods I've been waiting for.

The Dark Knight Rises: The Dark Knight was an overrated film, but that doesn't mean it wasn't awesome. Nolan has yet to release a film that I haven't loved, so I'm more excited that this is a Nolan film than this is a Batman film. The trailers have kept us somewhat in the dark about the plot and I hope that continues. And I'm sure Nolan's got a few tricks up his sleeve for the final film in his trilogy.

G.I. Joe Retaliation: Literally everything about this movie loos 100x better than the first one and more like the G.I. Joe movie I wanted. Seriously, the Snake Eyes/Jinx vs. Cobra ninjas on the mountain is worth the price of admission alone.

Snow White & the Huntsman: This just looks awesome. I don't even care that Kristen Stewart is in this (Honestly, she's an okay actress who got bad because of the direction of Twilight. Same thing happened to the actors in the Star Wars prequels) it has epic action, Theron as a crazy villain, and it looks like a really cool retelling.
