Podcast 158 Nov 2011: What did you think?

Postby BD » Mon Nov 28, 2011 12:48 am

Two shows in two days? I've worked my butt off but I got them online. I have one more to do.
http://www.spidermancrawlspace.com/word ... dcast-158/
The opening song is here. I dig this gals voice.

In this show we tackle Message Board Questions. Some of the highlights include:
*Reading of Itunes reviews.
*Our favorite Spider-Man cliffhanger of all time.
*JR debates who’s a better villain Khan or Norman Osborn.
*We share what should in the last panel of the last Spider-Man story.
*Is there any other female character besides MJ that would make sense to marry Peter Parker.

F***, George! You almost cost me a computer monitor. I was drinking Yoo-Hoo when you gave the new Zeta president advice: "Show up".

Hah! Been doing a pretty crappy job with that. Still, my track record's better than Irishlad's, recently. :D

Re: Kevin's assertion about Pre-Eccleston's Doctor's being "senior citizens"

The ages of Doctor Who's actors at the time of the start of their tenures

William Hartnell 55
Patrick Troughton 46
Jon Pertwee 50
Tom Baker 40
Peter Davison 29
Colin Baker 40
Sylvester McCoy 44
Paul McGann (the FOX TV movie Doctor) 36

And just to be complete
Christopher Eccleston 41
David Tennant 34
Matt Smith 27

Average age = 42.5

Average age including 9th, 10th and 111th = 40.1

Hartnell at 58, the oldest at the end of any actor's tenue, and Pertwee at 54 remain the only Doctor actors to be the Doctor (with the exception of special return episodes for Trougton and Tom Baker) beyond the half century mark.

All that to say that your assertion of senior citizenry of the UK's favorite time traveling alien is:

Kevin clearly deserves his own peculiar pergatory for his ageism and implying that people in their youthful, viable, and fabulous 40's are senior citizens. Unfortunately, even though I consider Tom Baker to be the definitive Dr. Who, and it was the Tom Baker characterization that was the foundation for the introduction of "Who" to American audiences in the 1980's upon which the character's currently popularity on this side of the pond is built - I don't think there is any way that a middle-aged actor with big teeth, a large nose, unkempt hair, and lack of sexual appeal to 15-25 year old girls would even be remotely considered for the role today. Sad, but true.

Which is telling considering Eccleston's appeal and how the show has been marketed since the relanch. I mean he was a year older than Tom was when Tom started.

Tom of course had that look of an burned out eccentric beatnik college proffessor and Eccleston had an edgy, cool "mad, bad and dangerous to know" style.

And just for the record, Shatner and Nimoy were both 35 (hey I'll be that this coming Feb, gulp) when Star Trek made its debut.

Just as a comparison since JR replied. ;)

Clearly, one of them has taken better care of himself.

Also, one of them has a chance of romantic tension with Rose, one them does not.

Random Tangent: The 9/Rose dynamic was much better than the 10/Rose dynamic.

Ah yes - "romantic tension" aka "The Quest to Get Laid." Well, that would make Doctor Who a perfect "New 52" DC series if the "Starfire - the Big Golden Boobed Slut" title doesn't do well.

But it really wasn't 'the quest to get laid.' The Doctor wasn't ever trying to bone her. There was just an unspoken love that developed between them that made their partnership much more dramatic. I don't see that happening if The Doctor had looked like Tom Baker at the time.

Romantic relationships with his companions was never an important factor for a Doctor to me personally. It's how appealing he is as a personality.

Also, several of the older, classic Doctors had what some would consider to be young-at-heart, childlike personalities. Tom Baker did without a doubt, and Patricvk Troughton did to an extent as well.
