One of my favorite Genesis games was Toejam and Earl.
Image

In it, you play as either Toejam (The red one...he's faster, because he has three legs. I was always TJ.), or Earl (Who is slower, due to his weight, but has more health.)

While out on a cruise through the cosmos, TJ decided to let Earl drive their spaceship...BIG mistake.
Image

Now they have to explore 25 levels of the game to find 10 pieces of their crashed spaceship. Along the way, they have to contend with all of the residents of a crazy, twisted planet called "Earth"...Have you heard of this place?
There are devils, crazed dentists, boogeymen (BOOGEY-BOOGEY-BOOGEY! [smilie=venom.gif] ), giant hamsters, flocks of chickens (with tomato-firing bazookas), hula girls (temporarily freeze you by dancing with you), cupids (if their arrows hit you, your controls are temporarily changed. Up can be left, down becomes right, etc.), tornadoes (pick you up and randomly drop you off elsewhere in the level...often over pits), and more. The most dreaded enemy, imo, was the haunted ice cream truck. It appears and disappears at random, trying to run you over. One hit will deplete nearly half of your health! The good news is that they can't turn well, and if you stick to the outer edge of the level, it will crash pretty easily.

Don't worry though...you do have items to help you on your quest. Pick up presents along the way, and you get things like bonus hi-tops (make you run faster), tomatoes (fire back at enemies. Not much range unless you find a slingshot), inner tubes (for swimming), Icarus wings (flight), a boombox (stops enemies by making them dance), rosebushes (blocks enemies path), "un-fall" (brings you back to the previous level if you fall off), and more.

There are also BAD presents. School book (makes you fall asleep), tomato rain (tomatoes fall from the sky, damaging you if they hit), rain cloud (randomly strikes you with lightning), earthling (produces a random earthling), and "Total Bummer" (instant death...SUCKS).

Presents can be picked up by walking over them, or by ordering them from a mailbox...but be careful, because some of the mailboxes are alive, and WILL decimate you.
Also, the presents are unknown until you open them. Once opened, you know exactly what that gift does, and can just drop any unwanted ones. Be careful, though. One of the presents is called a "randomizer", and it mixes up all your presents, starting you off from scratch.

The best thing about this game, the reason I kept coming back, is that the entire game is completely random. You never know which enemies will appear where, what any of the presents are (until you open them, or ask the wise but rare "Carrot Man", who will tell you what your presents are...for $2 each), or where the spaceship pieces are. The layout of each level is completely random, too. The ONLY thing that never changes is that the game is 25 levels long...otherwise, you will NEVER play the same game twice.

It also had some of the catchiest, funkiest music of any game.

If you've never played this game, I highly recommend it. It's a game so weird it has to be played to be believed. [smilie=spidey_thumbs.gif]

Back when, Stan and company won our hearts and minds. I cared about Spider-Man and the other Marvel characters as though they were friends. I cared every time Aunt May got sick. That's what good creative work does."

This game sounds and looks incredibly familiar.

Donald Duck as Maui Mallard

Cold Shadow, one of the finer SNES titles, better than all the Mario games, Disney interactive put plenty of effort into it
SpOck needs to stay, he's Superior in every way
From Scimitar to Merciless, and I'm barely violent :p
Sweet Tooth Batman
BATMAN is an awesome movie

Super Mario 2 is my favorite Mario Bros game. I remain disappointed that Mario never made a return trip to the world of Sub Con.

AmFan15 wrote:One of my favorite Genesis games was Toejam and Earl.

I loved that game. [smilie=spidey_dude.gif] The ending was great too. You could walk around and explore Toe Jam and Earl's world and neighborhood after the game was over. It was sort of like a bonus level for beating the game.

The Boogie Man was my favorite of all the enemies in the game.

I played the sequel briefly one weekend, but I don't remember much about it to be honest other than it was a sidescroller.

A personal favorite of mine was Echo the Dolphin for Sega Genesis. That game had amazing graphics at the time and great music.

Another great game for the Sega Genesis was one called Flashback. Anybody remember that one? It had a very engrossing story and very good graphics at the time too.

The sequel was alright. It had it's own charm, but it was nowhere near as much fun as the original.

Basically, when TJ & E returned from earth in the first game, a bunch of earthlings managed to hitch a ride, and have now invaded Funkotron. Making matters worse, their presence has scared away Lamont, the Great Funkopotamus. He is the lord of all funk on Funkotron. Without him, life as they know it will be...well...lame.
Now, it's up to TJ & E to capture all of the earthlings, and restore things to normal...well, as "normal" as things get on Funkotron, anyway! 8)

I tried Echo once, but it just never grabbed me. The graphics were great, but I didn't dig the gameplay.
Never played Flashback, though.

Eco was awesome because I love dolphins. I think I remember Flashback. Was it kind of like Blade Runner?

That Super Mario Bros 2 video was awesome AmFan. I love it. [smilie=spidey_dude.gif]

I always liked Wart more than Bowser and I love Bowser an awful lot. I just thought Wart was cooler.

Oh man. You had to bring up Toe Jam and Earl didn't you AmFan? I just got around to watching some youtube movies of it. [smilie=spidey_dude.gif] That takes me back. I remember my best friend at the time would borrow that game from someone he knew on the weekends and we'd play that game all the way through.

That game just brings back so much nostalgia it's unreal.

Similar.

Here's the Sega intro and ending. It was really ahead of it's time. It's remains one of the greatest video games from that time. It had innovative graphics and a stunning story.

________________________________________________________________________________

Here's what is undoubtedly one of my all time favorite video games. It's called The Immortal. It was released on the regular Nintendo and the Sega Genesis. The Sega version had the blood and guts. It's basically a D & D dungeon crawler type game. The Immortal might be the most violent game on the Sega system.

The story was great and very engrossing. The music and the levels were pretty creepy too. It was hard as hell. There are a lot of puzzles and riddles in the game. I love it.

Taking on the vile Norlac beast:

Trying to steer that cursed barrel was hard as heck, but man was it fun trying to get the Norlac into the whirlpool.

Here's the final battle with the dragon.

Glad you enjoyed it! [smilie=spidey_cheers.gif]

That video was from the awesome team of Duane and Brando. They took the music from several old school video games, and created some truly kick-ass songs.
From Double Dragon to Battletoads, Zelda to Mario...even Pac-Man and Duck Hunt. And if you can make a kick-ass song from Pac-Man? [smilie=spidey_dude.gif] You've got talent!
Sadly, they split a few years ago. They still produce music occasionally, but it was never quite the same. :(

It's hard to determine which of their videos was my favorite...
I think my favorite SHORTER song was Double Dragon (Never played the game much, but the music F-ing ROCKS)

They also produced some true EPICS, though. (Final Fantasy clocks in at 10:50. ) They're great because they cover almost every song in the game.
My favorite of these was Sonic, mainly because I played it a lot as a kid, and I always loved the music. Most of the music is actually from Sonic 2, but there's also some Knuckles and Game Gear in there, as well.
(4:39 is AWESOME!!! [smilie=spidey_thumbs.gif] Best music in all the Sonic games, IMO.)
Also, I'd recommend turning on the Closed Captions...the lyrics can be kind of hard to understand otherwise.

I went through and listened to some of their songs after you posted the Super Mario 2 vid. [smilie=spidey_thumbs.gif] I only listened to a few (Battle Toads, Super Mario, Zelda, and Pac Man), but the Pac Man and the Zelda ones were really good. I plan to try and hit the rest of them tomorrow.

I'll let you know what I think of them if you want. I like what I've heard so far.

By all means! [smilie=spidey_cheers.gif] When I first heard them, I got addicted.
Try Mega Man 2. It's another great Epic, and another of my favorites.

(Man, listening to all of these again has re-stoked my interest...I'll have to put 'em back on my MP3 player!)

Earth Worm Jim is another classic game and its sequel no one should ever forget. Who ever came up with that game must have been on something, and apparently really liked cows.
