True

Unfortunately, I think that this is the primary reason why many people dislike(d) the marriage. While other (but not all) writers handled it well, Michelinie was writing it very poorly in the flagship book, which colors most people's perception. J.M. DeMatteis in particular wrote Peter and MJ brilliantly together in The Spectacular Spider-Man, his brief pre-Clone-Saga and early Clone Saga contributions to The Amazing Spider-Man, and post-Clone-Saga on The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Also true. But this goes down as being one of my favorite moments.

I love the Michelinie run because it was the first side of Spider-Man from the comics that I became familiar with at a young age. The marriage, Venom and Carnage, all that stuff. I disagree that he wrote MJ as a sex object because she wasn't written like she was Empowered, always getting into compromising situations in scantily clad clothing and being made of nothing else of substance. I agree that he wrote the Peter and MJ marriage a lot of sexually charged than the relationship had been protrayed as at the time, but it didn't give me a bad impression of MJ at all. It was just another take. She didn't come off as stupid or useless to me, but that's just me.

Too harsh towards him, I think he's fine

I read the book recently, he kinda focused on that when Pete & MJ were together, going to take another look at the run

THANK. YOU. I've said for years that the only McFarlane art I actually like comes from the two issues McLeod inked.

Stan Lee's Iron Man, I don't dislike it per-se, his run has plenty of dull and stupid moments, like the Grey Gargoyle being able to break steel door with his bare hands but couldn't break clothing turned to stone by is touch, I was all like "WTF?!"
Comics drawn by Gene Colan, that guy's art is really good, like Alex Ross, not a guy for me to enjoy comics fully drawn by them

Michaelinie is like every bad aspect of those hack writers people made fun of in the 1980s, like a Frankenstein of bad writing tics. He tries to do those self-aware captions that Stan Lee did, 'cept he's isn't funny like Stan Lee and he overuses them. He has that annoying s-s-stuttering he has EVERYBODY do when action happens(Spidey, villains, civilians, EVERYBODY). He's constantly explaining what is clearly visible on the page, like he's writing a radio teleplay. Venom is terrible and is only popular because of his cool visual, Carnage is even worse, a one-dimensional unfunny maniac that starred in a terribly overlong crossover. Too many guest stars and cameos, too much big hair MJ and her cheesecake lingerie, too many stupid ass subplots like Peter robot parents going on for TWO FREAKIN YEARS and "Mary Jane...smoooooooooker!", too many violent boring vigilantes like Venom, Cardiac, The Jury, etc. Michaelinie is a poor man's Len Wein, who in turn was was a poor man's Gerry Conway, who was in retrospect a poor man's Stan Lee.

[smilie=spidey_cheers.gif] ALL of these were reasons I stopped reading Spidey way back when. When Peter's Parents were re-introduced, I thought to myself "SERIOUSLY? We're really going there? How long before THIS is done? " It was TOO long.
I made it through Maximum Carnage, but just barely.
After that, I was pretty much done. I never made it to the "reveal" of Pete's parents (They're fake? OMG, who could have ever suspected THAT? ). I stopped buying every issue, and just bought it if something interested me. But when the Clone Saga started, it was the final nail in the coffin.

I also TOTALLY agree with the anti-McFarlane view I'm hearing here. From the very first time I saw his art, I thought it was terrible. Meanwhile, EVERYONE else was talking about how great he was, and how he was on a different level than all others.

I always wondered why Spidey wasted SO much expensive web-fluid, then whined about his living conditions.

"Whether Aunt May dies or not isn't the question. If she dies, does it mean anything beyond a brief sales spike because collectors/speculators think they'll be able to make a profit selling the book later? That is the question. Back when, Stan and company won our hearts and minds. I cared about Spider-Man and the other Marvel characters as though they were friends. I cared every time Aunt May got sick. That's what good creative work does."

I never liked that fluff, still think it's stupid and useless

I like Len Wein, don't think he was masterful in anything, I liked his stories, "WHODUNNIT" and his first Shocker story are among my favorites

I was wondering about that too, why waste all that precious webbing?

Anyone here likes the "WEBS" reveal issue where Spider-Man is on a lightpole breaking a knife one guy wanted to use on another one saying he's in a good mood?

I disliked the majority of Grant Morrison's Batman run and I haven't really enjoyed a Geoff Johns book since Blackest Night #3 or #4. In terms of some retro stuff, I never really enjoyed The Dark Knight Returns. I know it's supposed to be a classic story, but it never did anything for me. And as for more current stuff, while I somewhat enjoy Mark Waid's Daredevil, I just don't see how so many people think it's "the best written comic" out there. It's decent for 2 issues, but I haven't seen anything amazing just yet.

Since we're already talking about the writers and artists we don't like, I'll add some more
Terry Dodson and Adam Hughes-Both of their art styles don't appeal to me. There's something with the faces and surfaces(that sounds weird) that just bother me. Maybe it's the coloring.

"The Uncanny Valley is hot, right kids?" No, it's just very creepy.

DD's costume looks quite dull. It's like he's not even wearing a costume, his skin is just red.

I hate Dark Phoenix issues, never did, still don't
I hate the more recent Mutants comics since Civil War, good ones are some of Wolverine's issues, origin comics, and maybe some random stuff here and there
Dark Avengers is a bad book, I kinda like what Bendis is doing now with normal Avengers, hate Osborn Avengers book

I love Terry Dodson's art, only issue I have is how he draws faces, never drew a face that looks good, everything around it looks good
