Vintage Spider-Man Games Series

Postby spidertour02 » Fri Jun 24, 2011 1:27 pm

Did you know that I've been doing a series on 16-bit Spider-Man games on the front page? Well, I don't blame you, because I haven't updated since October. However, I just resumed it after a long absence, so do me a favor and check it out! :)

Here are the articles so far ...
(1) Introduction
(2) Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin
(3) Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade's Revenge

Wow grampa! That sure is interesting! Tell me other stories from the past! Did you wear buffalo hides and hunt dinosaurs?

Ah, you kids today...no respect for history.
Just because a game is newer does not guarantee it will be better. Sure, the graphics might have improved a lot, but that doesn't necessarily mean the game will be more fun.
Personally, I loved Spider-Man Vs Kingpin. It was one of my favorite Spidey games, mostly because it had great graphics (for the day), all of his iconic villains, and the ability to take photos to earn money for web fluid. I'd much rather play that than Web of Shadows any day.

And look at it this way: Gerard has decided to start with the 16-bit games. It could be worse!

"Whether Aunt May dies or not isn't the question. If she dies, does it mean anything beyond a brief sales spike because collectors/speculators think they'll be able to make a profit selling the book later? That is the question. Back when, Stan and company won our hearts and minds. I cared about Spider-Man and the other Marvel characters as though they were friends. I cared every time Aunt May got sick. That's what good creative work does."

I considered covering the earlier games, but I decided against it for a few reasons. The main reason is that I simply never played those games as a kid. Articles like these come from a personal space (as evidenced by the way I've decided to approach this, as a personal narrative of sorts), and it would be a little odd to begin with games that I didn't play until much later.

That said, I might go back to them later, if this series proves popular. :)

Spider-man vs. The Kingpin and the PS1 Spider-man games are my favorite Spider-man games to date.
Good Story and just everything about the comic Spider-man is right. Of course I'm bias because of nostalgia.
Kids will understand one day. :)

Spider-man 2 and Ultimate Spider-man come in at a very close 2nd place.
Spider-man 2 has aged horribly and Ultimate Spider-man pulled a couple of tricks that I was not quite thrilled with.

*Dumbing down Webswinging
* Making the black suit too hard to unlock and worthless.
* Playable Ultimate Venom. (Was boring and a poor choice at the time since Hulk: UD was released.)

However to THIS day I believe that Ultimate Spider-man has had the best combat system in any Spider-man game to date.
I've never felt more like Spider-man in that game when he's bouncing off walls, webbing down thugs and swinging away within seconds.
It's a shame it never caught on. Thugs should not be able to take 10 punches from Spidey.

I loved Ultimate Spider-Man's design. It really captured the feeling of playing an actual comic, from the Mark Bagley art style to the characters jumping from panel to panel in the cutscenes. And the Venom/Electro battle in Times Square was EPIC...I LOVED that level.

What ruined it for me, however, were the repetitious levels. Almost every chapter consisted of cutscene/chase/battle/cutscene/chase/battle.
And I've said it before: the race scenes, when you had to have Spidey swing, crawl, or jump through the red web-shaped globes, reminded me entirely too much of Superman 64.

I'm not that much of a next gen snob. I remember playing the Spidey VS the Sinister Six game, along with other SNES games through an emulator back in the PS1 days. I miss my PS1, so many good memories, like Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 Enter Electro, Marvel VS Capcom and Tomba! I love Tomba, anyone else remember it?

Personally, I prefer DD 7. Both are the only Stan Lee era DD I've read, thanks to the Marvel Visionaries:Stan Lee hardcover.

I never played the Commodore or the Atari ones. My cousin had an Atari I played all the time, but he didn't have the Spider-Man cartridge. I was quite upset...
I had an NES, and played that one...I think I beat it once. It was pretty hard in some levels.

(BTW, Brad: I was at a used bookstore in my area, where they sell classic video games a while back, and I overheard a kid ask his Dad:
"Dad...what's an Atari?"
I've never felt so old IN MY LIFE!!! [smilie=spidey_lol.gif] [smilie=spidey_cheers.gif] )

I agree. I really like USM for what it was. The last level with the Venom/Carnage battle and then Spidey/Venom was really epic too.

The comic style presentation was really cool. I'd love to see that repeated more. The only thing about that game I couldn't stand were all the race and catch missions. Hate those things.

I also enjoyed Maximum Carnage quite a bit too. Hard as heck, but I was able to routinely finish it. I've still got my Sega with my games. I love the red Maximum Carnage game cartridge. [smilie=venom.gif]

I'm honestly quite shocked people refer to it as a bad Spider-man game. It's had the best presentation to date.
Only thing that would have made it better is Josh Keaton.

I didn't mind the chase scenes with Spider-man so much. Spidey's quips made the scenes interesting.
I would have preferred if they went old school (ala Maximum Carnage) and allowed you to choose what character you wanted to play as.

Those are cassette tapes. They phased out in the 90s.
You think we're old because of that?

I'm sure you have no idea what an 8-track is.

I also used to rent the Spider-man games as a kid. Oddly enough he was my favorite video game character but I never owned any Spider-man games until the PS1 games were released.
Man I still remember when I first read about it in Electronic Gaming. At that time my love for the character had been at it's highest and I was absolutely determined to get the game on it's release day. I beat it on a school night.

I also enjoyed Maximum Carnage quite a bit too. Hard as heck, but I was able to routinely finish it. I've still got my Sega with my games. I love the red Maximum Carnage game cartridge. [smilie=venom.gif]

This was my favorite one to rent of all the Spider-man games on my genesis.
I got to the final level fight with Carnage and lost. Still good memories though.

After I graduated from High School and found a Full-time job I went back and bought every Classic Spider-man and Batman game I played as a kid for home consoles.
While I was helping my sister move, I moved a few things for a woman who was donating to her and she gave me her son's old Super Nintendo since it was just collecting dust.

Batman NES
Batman Returns NES
Adventures of Batman and Robin SNES/Genesis
Batman Returns SNES/Genesis (Although I had already owned it on the genesis as a kid. Good game but a hard one.)

Spider-man vs. The Kingpin (Lucky enough to find a mint copy on ebay for 13 dollars.)
Spider-man SNES
Spider-man and Venom Separation Anxiety. (Would suck hard if it were not 2 players.)
Maximum Carnage SNES (Seller lied it was not the red cartridge but I'm happy I have a good copy.)
Marvel Superheroes: War of the Gems.

Such good memories.

Living in the Philippines, we're still at least several years behind you guys. I remember having a Walkman, a Game Gear and the Famicom(remember those?) I still haven't gone completely digital; I have an iPod but I still buy CDs and DVDs.

Sorry guys, not trying to ruin your good memories! =P

However, I still don't know what an 8-track is, so there.
