Matthew Vaughn on X-Men: "The Twilight girls will like it."

Postby George Berryman » Mon Jan 24, 2011 5:05 pm

From AICN, via Vaughn's EW interview. One slight spoiler hidden below:

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/48208

"The best way of describing it is X-Men meets Bond, with a little bit of Thirteen Days thrown in for good measure. It’s set in the ’60s, and I basically molded a young Magneto on a young Sean Connery. He’s the ultimate spy — imagine Bond, but with superpowers."

"Kevin Bacon plays a very megalomaniac mutant [Sebastian Shaw] who decides that he can take over the world and that mutants are the future. Erik and Charles then meet each other and hook up with the CIA to try and prevent World War III. You find out everything about what went on between Erik and Charles."

"It’s got a lot of teenage angst. The Twilight girls will like it."

So it's like Bond (he states it twice) meets Twilight...

Well, I had already scratched this movie anyways. I'll probably still watch in on Netflix eventually.

Ah yes, teenage angst. Nothin' I love doing more than watching teens with super powers get all sullen and depressed cuz of girl/boy trouble or because they feel like an outsider.

"Hey dude, wanna use our awesome powers to save the world?" :D

"What's the point? She doesn't love me because... I'm a freak!"

"So? did ya see that blue chick? Or that hot girl with the tail? C'mon man, we can do anything, let's go kick some butt and have fun!" :D

"You just don't understand man, I'm so different and alone. I need to go brood on rooftop now."

"Whatever man. It's the 60's, and I'm a hip guy who can level a building with his mind. I'm gonna go live every nerd's fantasy! See ya!" :D

I'm less concerned about the Twilight comparison than I am about Kevin Bacon playing Sebastian Shaw. What kind of casting is that?

Not sure what to think of this yet. But I at least know I don´t want it to resemble twilight at all. Enough with the hype around those movies already. And what´s wrong with Kevin Bacon playing Sebastian Shaw? I thought he looked okay in one of the pictures. Could have been worse.

It's getting to the point where it's a race to see which Marvel movie will suck the hardest.

And I think this is where I'll bow out of X-men movies. They really just need to shelf X-men for awhile.

At this point, I'm just interested in January Jones.

I'm having a hard time deciding between this and Cap.

And so the death of the superhero fad in movies has finally begun, Oversaturation of the market in its prime.

Which is too bad, because there are a lot of cool superheroes that never got their shot at a movie.

I'm gonna give Vaughn the benefit of the doubt on this one... Plus I've just read a volume of Runaways and that's very teen angsty, yet awesome....
He did give us Kickass after all and that movie is awesome.

Teenage Angst can work well and I seriously doubt Vaughn has seen Twilight, so he's just going with the stereotypical "Twilight girls love angst."
The Runaways, Young Avengers, various incarnations of X-men and Spider-Man have worked off of Teen angst to good effect.

Vaughn made a comment on that and said he took the X-men job so he could get out a good mainstream comic book movie (Kickass kinda went out with a fizzle at box offices) before the market killed itself.
