DC Online: Anyone buying this?

Postby BD » Sun Jan 16, 2011 3:30 am

It seems you have to buy the game for $60 then it's $15 a month to play with other people. WTF?

A lot of MMO's are pay to play. Based on what I have heard so far I can't see myself getting this anytime soon. Some people are almost max level, damn.

Well, I WAS planning on buying it, but not if it's going to cost me $15 a month just to play it! :x

I thought I read somewhere that it was supposed to be based on how much you play...For example, you buy the game, and then you play for free until you reach a certain point, at which point you have the option to buy an expansion pack to continue on. Did anyone else hear that, or did I just misunderstand?

If that's the case, then I'll get it...Otherwise, I'll pass on this game, and use my $60 to buy Arkham City when it comes out. THAT game will be worth it! [smilie=spidey_thumbs.gif]

"Whether Aunt May dies or not isn't the question. If she dies, does it mean anything beyond a brief sales spike because collectors/speculators think they'll be able to make a profit selling the book later? That is the question. Back when, Stan and company won our hearts and minds. I cared about Spider-Man and the other Marvel characters as though they were friends. I cared every time Aunt May got sick. That's what good creative work does."

I'm sure like most other MMO's, you can play for the first month free and then you have to decide to keep it and pay, or cancel the account.

Wow! I had no idea about this extra $15 a month business! That would be a 'no' for me!

[b]I bought it.......and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I based my character on Spider-Man. I call him The Emerald Arachnid......and yeah, I know that spiders aren't green, but green is my favorite color.

This is correct. You get a month free, and then it's $15 a month for the subscription.

Please tell us more as you get time to play it. I picked this up in the store today and looked at it but I just don't know. I am very leery of buying a MMO that I don't get to try first.

I got it for the PS3. I really like it. I've made it to level 13. The game has a couple of bugs, but I think it's worth the time I'm spending with it. If you get it for the PS3, you can use the PSN cards to pay for your $15 monthly charge. The Playstation Store has deals on 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year subscription plans. I bought the 3 month one, plus the first month free that you get when you buy the game. You create your own hero.......or villain to play as. The regular DC herores or villains send you out on missions. I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't say anything about the missions.

It's a standard set-up for these massive multiplayer games, due to the server costs etc incurred by running them. I don't think it's unreasonable, but it is the main reason I too don't go anywhere near them.

Here's the thing, though: I'd be much more willing to pay the monthly fee for something like World of Warcraft than I would for DC Universe Online. The main reasoning is that WoW is a proven commodity that has shown itself to be worth the fee due to its continuing development and support. DCUO is clearly an experiment in extending MMOs to consoles, and we have no idea at this stage if it will be successful enough to be sustained. It's been watered down to work on the PS3's infrastructure, and therefore it's debatable as to whether or not this game's fee is worth it.

Well, whether the quality of the game justifies the fee is entirely subjective. And whether continuing development and support will happen is a risk with any new MMO, regardless of format. If everyone thought like that, launching a new product would be impossible. (Then again, no other game has come that close to competing with WoW, so maybe that is more or less what has happened.) Certainly, without a monthly fee they'd run out of money after the initial rush of sales and continued development and support would be tricky.
