Re: Doctor Who thread - Exit Tennant, enter Smith

Remember all the criticism Heath Ledger got by fans thinking that he couldn't measure up to Jack Nicholson as the Joker? Then when the Dark Knight came out, not only did Ledger prove the critics wrong, audiences and critics alike believe he actually surpassed and owned the role? Well, after seeing the "Eleventh Hour" that's exactly what I felt Matt Smith did with regards to David Tennett when it came to the Doctor. And it only took ONE episode.

Granted, there are similarities between Eleven and Ten. Both of them are
hyperactive, mercurial, ingenuous, eccentrics who are over-confident to the point of near-arrogance but still very persuasive. Yet, there's a very subtle difference, I think, between them. Ten had a tendency to wear his emotions on his sleeve, as if to say to people, "I may be a mad and quirky alien, but deep down, I'm just as human as you are." Also he, at times, carefully but rapidly weighed all his options before finalizing and enacting a plan, often talking out loud his thought process. It was all borne out of his loneliness, the frustration with him being near-immortal, and having the burden of the universe forces upon his shoulders.

Eleven, however, doesn't care what you think of him so long as you listen to what he has to say. So what if he eats fish sticks with custard, or barges into rooms and just uses other people's stuff, or just randomly talks to strangers, or changes his clothes in public? He knows he's the smartest guy in the room, knows what he's doing, and all he asks from people is to just trust him. What's more, Eleven pretty much flies by the seat-of-his-pants, adapting to the situation accordingly and stubbornly sticking to whatever plan he has in mind. If it doesn't work, he just goes, "Okay, plan B." At least that's the impression I got from Matt Smith's portrayal.

Looking forward to tonights episode. I enjoyed it last week. Overall I'd give last week an A-. They were trying a wee bit to hard. Smith's enjoyable and Gillian is Scottish so it's all good.

Good episode, I thought. Perhaps not ground-breaking, but a nice standard Doctor Who adventure. The new Doc needs to have a few of those really. And actually looking forward to the Daleks next week.

Solid overall episode. I would give it a B maybe a B+. It was an entertaining episode. It was good how Smith didn't just figure it out and that Amy solved the situation. looking forward to WWII and the Daleks.

Fun episode here again. It was a nice way of reintroducing the Dal;eks and actually keeping them around. Overall I'd give it an A-

Quite liked the Dalek episode. Good fun, although I admit probably the weakest of the series so far. I don't think it really had a strong enough ending of its own beyond bringing back the Daleks then... watching them leave. Still liking the Doctor and Amy themselves though.

Honestly the Darlek epsisode is the only epsidoe of the new seires i have enjoyed so far, and depending how the series will play out will depends if i still enjoy yhe episode come the end of the series, since if these new darleks get killed of in a season finale or something come the end of the series, then it will annoy me since i always hated that about the Darleks.

Roll on the Cyberman episode since i after watchign the first part of the 2 part Angel epsidode i prefer the original from season 3 alot more than this.

Already the new series (5) is better than season 4. Tennant's final run only picked up steam towards the end. Matt Smith doing a fine, fine job as The Doctor.

Anyone seen the Weeping Angels episode yet?

Aside from the well-documented (and rather over-discussed) Graham Norton trailer thing, I thought it was a great start. If the second part is as good, it could be a classic. Otherwise, you know, just a quite good two-parter. I do like that the 'crack' arc seems to be heading for a resolution already, as it was a bit obvious to be dragged out all series. It wasn't the same type of story as Blink, but I don't think that's exactly bad. If Moffat hadn't brought back the angels himself, someone else would've.

Personaly i think that is VERY unfair towards Tennants final run. Since your forgetting that Smith has got a full series, yet during Tennants last run it was some specials scattered through each season during the year with the final 2 over the xmas period. So its kinda unfair to compare the steam of a weekly series to specials without a 'continued weekly' run.

Yeah i saw the Angles episode, i liked it, i prefer the first one, but its shaping up to be a good 2parter though.

Although im not much for this crack in time thing though. Since all the other series' the end of season thing (im assuming this is what it is) have been rather subtle, but this crack seems to be rather in your facce 'HA THERE IS A CRACK EVERYONE LOOK AT THE CRACK *pan shot to the crack*'.

No I'm referring to Season 4 which by the standards set down in 1-3 was poor and only picked up steam towards the end. I liked some of the specials after that.
I think Tennant's acting chops and Catherine Tate saved it form being a total disaster. And as I said it only picked up steam in the last three episodes or so of season 4. That's why I'm saying season 5 already looks like it could be strong. No Russell T Davies mucking it up I suppose. ;-)

The first weeping Angels episode "Blink" is a bit of a classic and formed for me one of the greatest trio of Doctor Who adventures --The two part "Family of Blood" and "Blink".
The new one was very good and very Quatermas like. It's shaping up well.

I wasn't a huge fan of the latest episode (get off my screen Graham Norton) but was still enjoyable. I've never really been a fan of the River Song character. This was solid but I expect better from this week. B.

In the UK, towards the end, Graham Norton showed up on screen promoting the next show during the big speach the Doctor had at the end. It was really annoying.
