Golden Age Spider-Man

Postby Big Al » Thu Oct 11, 2012 6:29 am

So I'm assuming this most appropriatly fits in the off comic section since I guess this classifies as a fanfic but I thought it could be fun for us to spitball ideas and shoot the breeze on what it would've been like if Spider-Man was created in the 1930s in stead fo the 60s and employ some of the Golden age sensabilities to him. Personally I've always wated to see this in a comic book preferably with the Alex Ross Spider-Man costume because seriously why has that never appeared in comic form before. I know about Spider-Man Noir but that was "What if Spider-Man lived in the 30s" it isn't exactly the same thing if you see where I am coming from. I think the hard luck hero with money problems living during the depression could be grounds for some interesting stuff. So what are some of your ideas?

To put him back in the 30's would be a good concept. Noir was like that but I always had my own ideas about it.
He'd still be at a newspaper but he'd have to double as a dock worker or something trade like. I'd also make him either Irish or Italian. My family had a rough go of it during the depression as Italian immigrants so it would hit close to home for me. Also the science of that era would be pretty cool to tap into. Fermi and Einstein having a huge impact on Peter would make for some interesting gadgets.
I'd start with Doc Oc as a villin. It would suit the time period to make him a German or Hungarian mad scientist and would still allow him to have his tentacles because of the atomic and nuclear research heading the times. I'm at work or else I'd go further lol
Thoughts??
Oh and I'd call the first ark "the manhattan projects"

I think Irish would work best since he’s never come off as Italian. Doc Ock could have the 90s cartoon accent. Would Spidey be more violent like Golden Age Superman or Batman do you reckon?

I think more like the batman. More brutal of a fist fighter. And being Irish, deffinately plated knuckles in the gloves.

Maybe it would draw upon the Spider Pulp character a bit too

Nothing to really add, other than mention the fact that the suit was used in the "What if? Spider-Man VS Wolverine" one-shot.

I read an analysis of Spidey somewhere (TV Tropes?) that pointed out how his origin/character was more of a subversion of the commonplace Silver Age sensibilities (within the limits of the CCA, of course), which might help explain his runaway popularity: there were no other characters like him then. Translating this to Golden Age sensibilities would present an interesting challenge, though your ideas here look good so far.

Spider-Man will actually be his real identity whilst Peter Parker would be the disguise he'd use to fool the world.
Mary Jane would be constantly trying to prove Peter Parker is Spider-Man and he will rationalise that he can never be with her because she has a fear of spiders which will become her definging characteristic

Peter Parker is already at least half Irish. Parker is a name of Anglo-Saxon origin but his mother Mary Teresa Fitzpatrick was(/is?) definitely a woman of Irish decent.
