Toonami Returns?

Postby Spider » Wed Apr 04, 2012 11:24 pm

Back in March of 1997, the action animation block of cartoons on Cartoon Network was created. It was called Toonami. I began watching it around the Summer of 1997.

When I got older, I partook in that of The Midnight Run.

I followed as TOM and company went through the different events that would change the outlook of the Absolution.

Then, on September 20, 2008, TOM and his crew submitted their final transmission. I wasn't aware of the event until almost a week afterward. I wrote a short goodbye, and shared here, on the Spider-Man Crawlspace Message Board and that was that.

Until this passed Saturday, March 31, 2012.

At 11:59PM, [adult swim] tweeted, "#toonami". Cartoon Network's late night programming was taken over by TOM. It was meant as an April Fool's joke, but, it caught fire. Nostalgic 90's fans like myself took in the familiar sights and sounds of the old ship, and her captain, TOM. Then we took to Twitter, thanking [adult swim] for the trip down memory lane. Then, on April 2nd, the fire spread.

"@adultswim: Want it back? Let us know. #BringBackToonami"

Almost as quickly as it was there, #BringBackToonami was trending. And apparently, it was trending for a while. Today, roughly 8 hours before this posting, this tweet showed up in my timeline:

"@adultswim: #BringBackToonami We've heard you. Thank you for your passion and interest - stay tuned."

So, now, 3 years and 7 months after mourning Toonami's departure, it appears to have been resurrected.

I plan to heed the direction given by [adult swim] and 'stay tuned.'

I put this little timeline together, so those of you who don't have twitter and/or don't want to hunt down the tweets can see them.

I'm happy for the Toonami fans. I was never into it but I know it's a huge deal.

I only remember Toonami for the DCAU cartoons, and their BTAS commercial that is responsible for me getting into comics.
Podcast 215: The episode where Kevin Cushing not only called me a good friend, but agreed with my taste in comics. That there's signature worthy! [smilie=spidey_dude.gif]

I grew up when toonami was in its biggest. Back when DBZ and Gundam where legitimately powerful shows on TV.
When the slot came on again on April 1 I was happy to tell you the truth, despite the fact that I own Dragon ball,I own not only wing but a plethora of other Gundam goodies and so on and so on with big-o and outlaw star.
However I dont find myself hoping on the nostalgia train like alot of people are.
In this age of the internet I dont think I would find myself watching edited cartoons/anime that i could watch unedited later on when the unedited ver comes out on Blu Ray.
I understand that if the slot was put on at 5:30 for school kids and not saturdays then the slot may survive, depending on what they had to offer.
All I can say is, you have all these people wishing and hoping that this magical thing from their childhood will come back and if it does, I can bet you some of those hoppers and dreamers will complain because the shows they watched wont be on.
Not only that but from what I have read they have been hinting at more of a online service relaunch like they had before, and not an actual time slot.
Now im happy for those who want it back just to say "Hey I use to watch tom as a kid" or are lagit in thinking it may lead to new shows and more actual cartoons, but there are those who say If it isnt dragon ball z and blue sub 6 then its crap and when you try to explain "oh well alot of those are lost rights" prepare for the butt hurt.

My excitement comes from the idea of Toonami being a regular block again. Not necessarily it's content.

It was through Toonami that I discovered many awesome shows, and broadened my horizons in the sense that without it, I wouldn't know what Tenchi Muyo! is. Not to mention Dragon Ball and anything Gundam.

I'm excited for the idea of a new Toonami, because in a world of Total Drama Island, SpongeBob Squarepants, and Regular Show--kids need good old action cartoons and the creativity they inspire.
