Not his fault. Stephen Sommers is one of the worst directors in all of Hollywood. He's almost as bad as Michael Bay.

Sommers is infinitely worse. I actually enjoyed the first Transformers, and although I didn't like the second one, I'd still watch one of his movies if it interested me enough. But after the atrocity that was Van Helsing, just seeing Sommers' name attached to a film is pretty much a guarantee that I WILL NOT watch it.
As a big fan of the Universal Classic Horror films, I was excited about the idea of seeing them come back to the big screen...I was so wrong.
That piece of crap ruined not only Sommers reputation, but any hope I had of seeing a faithful representation of those classic monsters.
Hell, The Monster Squad was much better. It was pretty faithful to the characters, had some truly great moments, and was VERY fun to watch...and despite being nearly 25 years old, it still hasn't lost it's charm.

gregxb wrote:Bad direction can ruin even a great actor like Anthony Hopkins.

[smilie=spidey_yeah_that.gif] As proof of this, watch The Wolfman...but (I stress this vehemently) ONLY to prove this to yourself.
Another Universal remake of one of my favorites. I was not at all excited about that one, having learned my oh-so-painful lesson from before. But, I thought that maybe, just maybe, Universal would have learned their lesson as well, and would make a film that would not only do the original justice, but also revive interest in the old classics, and wash away the stink of previous failures.

That was easily the most boring film I've seen in QUITE some time. For nearly an hour, all we did was meet characters we didn't care about, learn about the (*yawn*) "oh-so-fascinating" mystery of the Talbot family, and set up atmosphere. All I could think to myself as I watched this was: WHO CARES? WHERE'S THE DAMN WEREWOLF??? GET ON WITH IT!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Sorry...went off on a bit of a rant there. But when I hear that name, it raises such rage in me that I have to vent it, or simply explode.
Crisis averted. Carry on!

Yeah I know, but I still refer to it as the Burton Franchise because it's easier to do so.

gregxb wrote: Stephen Sommers has never made a movie that wasn't garbage.

That is not true. He's made two that were pretty good. The first Mummy was and is a very good movie, and Deep Rising is a solid B monster movie that was very funny and entertaining.

The Monster Squad is one of my all time favorite movies. I've seen it at least fifty times. I own it on dvd and Blu Ray. It is a perfect film.

[smilie=spidey_cheers.gif] I couldn't agree more. It's up at the top of the list for me, too! In fact, I watched it again last night, because just thinking about Van Helsing reminded me of just how great a movie The Monster Squad really was!

I don't know why but I really can't stand when Directors cast actors they've already worked with in a new film. It's always bugged me and annoyed it, I feel as though roles were specifically created for said actor. Take Michael Caine in Inception, you could have taken his role out and things wouldn't have played out so differently. He still had a part but I don't think the movie would have suffered had he been taken out.

It's just a petty thing of mine, I've never liked it and never will. At least he's choosing more than one actor to be in the films. Not like Tim Burton who ass-rapes Johnny Depp in all his movies.

If the talent is good, I see no problem with it. I mean, how many times did Martin Scorsese work with Robert De Niro or Joe Pesci?

Did anyone see the fake Warner Bros. release saying JGL was playing Black Mask? It was on CBR and I totally thought it was real. Really bummed out now since I don't think Alberto Falcone (JGL's rumored role) is worth any kind of screen time.

I have yet to see Tim Burton "ass-rape" Depp, or anyone else, in a film he either directed or produced.

Ass-rape wasn't the correct word, I'm not quite sure what I was thinking there.

Basically what I mean is that he casts Johnny Depp in a LOT of his movies, his wife also. Depp and Bonham-Carter are good actors, don't get me wrong but I really don't like when a director casts his favourite actors over again. Bonham-Carter gets the parts because he's his wife. I think there's lots of great talent out there from various actors, just waiting to be discovered and when a director picks someone he's worked with before over someone who wants to break into the business, I think it's unfair.

It's just something that's bugged me. It won't stop directors casting who they want in films and it's just a pet peeve of mine which shouldn't bother me at all.
