Mark Waid's Daredevil

Postby iron_patriot » Fri Sep 23, 2011 3:24 am

I haven't been reading this title(haven't had any comics for two months at all, actually) and I've been wanting the Crawlspace's opinions on this book.
Mabuhay ang Crawlspace!

I haven't tried it either, but... now that I think of it... my reason for not trying it was a first for me in my 40 plus years of reading comics.

I've really enjoyed the Bendis Daredevil run on DCU and I've bought all the Brubaker Daredevil trades (I just started reading Return of the King), so I was seriously considering picking up Daredevil 1 and trying it out for a few months...

And then Wacker pulled another one of his online shenanigans...
I honestly don't remember what precisely it was or whether it was here or at CBR (there are just so many). But for the first time in my life I made a buying decision based solely on the the real life behavior of an Editor.

I know it probably isn't fair to the creative team, but you can only tolerate so much ridicule and mockery before you decide not to financially support people who repeatedly demonstrate public disdain for their customers.

Something that's been bugging me about the book are the reviews that it gets. If you look on CBR or IGN they call it the best the book has been in years. They also say that it's nice that the book isn't as dark as it's been since pretty much '98. I've been reading it as, "we're giving the book a high ratings because it's brighter, not necessarily because it's telling a good story." Daredevil is my favorite character and I have to admit (even though I've only read issues 1-2) that the reviewers are going a little overboard on their praise. It's a good book, but don't base the quality of something on the fact that it's NOT something you DON'T like. I like dark Daredevil, and I like light Daredevil, but as of now I think volume 3 is a little overrated. For those who do genuinely love the book, I'm glad you do because DD is a great character.

I've been enjoying it, but not as much as I thought I would. The art and overall production values are terrific but the storytelling feels a little uneven at the moment. The courtroom stuff hasn't really done it for me so far and I think that more could have been made of the superherooics. That said I would highly recommend the book and I think it will improve. And I really can't praise the artistic talent behind the book enough - it looks great.

Also for what it's worth I'm pretty sure CBR gave #3 a fairly average review?

Its not as good as the Bendis run for sure, but, so far, it's been great, and I really like the direction they are taking DD in.

I'd recommend picking it up

The art is amazing, and I've always enjoyed a good Mark Waid comic

I didn't pick it up for 3 reasons.

1. I personally can't stand Marcos Martin's art.

2. BND stuff is creeping in there. Michelle Gozales, really?

3. After Mark Waid's little "fuck superhero comics" tirade last year, I'm done buying anything he does.

I'm reading it, and it's awesome.

The art is fantastic. It's not Marcos Matrin, but Paulo Rivera. His interpretation of DD's powers is UNMATCHED. The stories are pretty basic, but the characterizations and voices are spot on.

If it helps, those preview shots of the girl that looked like Michelle weren't actually her but a new character name Kirsten McDuffie. Michelle was only referenced by name but they called her Michelle "Rodriguez"...a mistake that Wacker noted.

I've been reading it and I keep telling myself this issue is the last, but I keep picking up the next one... I'm not in love with any of it, but it really stands out on the stands right now, being so light hearted... This comic has filled the hole in my heart where Batgirl once resided and the artistic use of his powers is pretty grand... But once something else fills that hole, I doubt I'll continue with it...

I got sucked into Daredevil from the Bendis run and really enjoyed it through the Brubaker run...then I kind of jumped off because it was kind of like, "How much more horrible crap can we do to Matt Murdock". The book is definitely a breath of fresh air in the lighter nature. I like the ongoing plot where people in the streets keep calling Matt Daredevil and he just denies it. Rivera's artwork is absolutely top notch and love the way he's drawn DD's radar sense. I have issue # 4 sitting off to the side and haven't gotten a chance to read it yet but flipped through it because I saw that Marcos Martin is now doing the art duties. Freakin' amazing. Seriously...buy this book just because of the artwork and it's worth the price of admission. Plus Waid is just taking it back to basics...that's really what the character has needed. I'm hoping that Waid sticks around on the book for a while. He's had a track record of starting off on a title then he just disappears from it.
