The Fantastic Four

Postby butters911 » Wed Jul 21, 2010 7:25 am

Besides Spidey, they are my favorite. I wish they could just team up forever and ever
"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine and a whole multicolored collection of uppers, downers, laughers, screamers . . . Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon . . ."

When written correctly no complaints. I am a little tired of the revolving door they had there during Civil War.

I still have to go back and read the John Byrne FF run.
I've heard outstanding things about it!

As a "sometimey" FF fan. I've gotta check it out. :)

I looooved the Byrne FF run. Don't tell anyone, but I like it better than the Lee/ Kirby run. I know!!!

Is that the run when She-Hulk was on the team? Because I love that too.

I personally think Hickamns current run has the book out the best its been since kirby.

Agreed 100% - Jonathan Hickman's been playing with big ideas, in the manner they should be when you're working on the Fantastic Four. It puts his recentmost predecessor to shame.
"Let’s say your Uncle Joey promises you a big bowl of chocolate pudding. He makes great chocolate pudding, too. And you love chocolate pudding, so look at that – match made in Heaven, right?

"So you sit down, you got on your pudding bib, you've got your pudding spoon, and you’re singing your pudding-is-awesome song because you always sing it right before you have your pudding.

"And then, your Uncle Joey hands you a big bowl of cat crap.

"And then, Uncle Joey tells you that the pudding is just beyond that cat crap, about three inches into the bowl – and he promises, cross-his-heart, that it’s the best pudding he’s ever made, and you’re gonna love it. And it’s waiting for you…juuuuust beyond the cat crap.

"The point is this: I’d have been down for that pudding if you hadn’t tried to make me swallow cat crap first."

Well when you're recent most predecessor is Mark Millar... 8)

Waid/Ringo is my favorite FF run. For the first time, I really cared about this crazy family. Also, there was a rather fun Spider-man two-parter :)

Heh, seriously - I got this one buddy of mine who put it best...Mark Millar doesn't write comic books - he writes movie pitches and uses a comic book format. And that's exactly what was wrong with his tenure on FF. No regard for continuity, ideas poorly executed...just one big empty scene after the other.

Mark Waid/Mike Wieringo's run was for my money the last Great Definitive Run on the FF prior to Hickman. I almost kinda wish Alan Davis was given more than just the cover art...

Yes, I love me some F4, and have been greatly enjoying Hickman's run.

As for Millar...he is a good writer. I've seen him write some amazing stuff, specifically in Superman: Red Son, 1985, and even Old Man Logan, to a certain extent (the ending with Hulk was a bit WTF). Now, though, and this was shown during his F4 run, he's mostly a great pitch-man for some bat-shit insane ideas. If there's anything Hickman could take from him, it's the ability to mix his own solid, amazing hard sci-fi sensibilities, with some of Millar's over the top scenarios, like the Anti-Galactus Mecha.

These Lee/Kirby essentials are good! I can see why the series was so popular back in the 60's!

I actually love the much hated Defalco run in the 90's. Mostly because I'm a sucker for Lyja. Lyja represents the reset button and retconning in the most unusual way.

The Thing's girlfriend cheats on him with Johnny Storm and they get married. Lots of status quo shakeup and character changes and they still managed to hit the reset button!

I do too - DeFalco REALLY had me thinking Reed and Doom were gone for good!

And I too miss Lyja; and I was very disappointed when she was described in Secret Invasion: Fantastic Four as Johnny's "ex-LOVE."

Not as bad as when he called her "a girl he used to date". They were married and at one point she was "pregnant" with his child!

Oddly enough Johnny got over his feelings for Alicia real quickly.
