They’ve got their work cut out for them, don’t they? How many of you heard about this Marvel NOW! thing and immediately got a puss on your face? Did you see the announcement with its lone image and immediately post “Yawn” or “meh.”? If so, why did you do that? I’m as curious about that as I am about Uncanny Avengers. What thoughts compel you to type such a thing? If you actually find the news boring or unworthy of your attention, don’t you just actually yawn or say “meh.” out loud and go back to your cancer cure research? When you go to Target, do you walk around the store announcing, “Those polo shirts do nothing for me. I’m not buying any detergent, either. Cool Ranch Doritos are just Doritos in a different bag” to no one in particular?

Okay, so this doesn’t excite you. What would excite you at this point?

Is All New X-Men a rehash of the Teen Tony storyline?

No, because they aren't de-aging an existing character, they're bringing characters from the past forward in time to exist alongside their present-day counterparts. And presumably be a little scared at what they find.
Read Hobson & Choi - my comedy-mystery webserial - right now.

That would do it. If they did do it and I mean full on heres the story and the whole nine yards I'd almost have to start buying comics again.

I hope I'm wrong, I really, really do hope I'm wrong.

But the more I read, the more the coming reboot is starting to look like this:

Image

I mean, think about it: Given the collossal stink caused by the OMD/BND reboot and the aftermath, can you imagine what the reaction is going to be when Marvel does essentially the same thing to their entire line ? Lordy, lordy, it's just begging for trouble.

I am a Delta because I loved Spider-Man, I grew up with him and I want to love him again.
I'm a Delta because I believe that being true to the spirit of who Peter is means that we must dissent to carry the torch that Stan the Man lit.
I’m a Delta because I believe that Peter Parker’s best days are still ahead of him, with Mary Jane Watson-Parker by his side.

Some little things released--here we have Captain America's costume in Marvel Now:

First is a design by Jerome Opena (putting a little more fuel to the first of a new Cap ongoing by Remender and him?):

Image

Then John Cassaday wanted to tweak it for his Uncanny Avengers book:

Image

When asked about the differences, Breevort said: "I’m sure that when other artists draw the suit, there’ll be some individual modifications as well -- Joe Q mentioned that it was a bitch to draw when he was doing the Marvel NOW! promo image, so we figured that different guys would find ways to streamline it in different ways."

So...basically the costumes can be different depending on the artist/book. I have a feeling that some of our own visual-continuity minded folk will have a shit-fit over that.

Personally, I kinda like the first design by Opena more--if you're going to go for a more practical, paramilitary look, I'd rather them not go half-assed about it.

I'm not at all surprised that Marvel is trying to capture the look of the movies. The first one is certainly the most eye catching IMHO, but the second is at least somewhat more faithful to the comics and is probably easier to draw consistently.

THe Ultimate Cap's new gear looks quite similar to that as well. Except he has some armour plates bulking up his look.

Yeah, I'm really liking that Jerome Opena redesign of Cap's suit. Especially the leg and wrist armor.
I'm CHAOS. CHAOS and the rest of the world won't ADMIT that it's JUST LIKE ME. And because o' THAT the world is WORTHLESS, it's dirt on my HEEL. Love means NOTHING. It's a planet of mannequins filled with blood and they may as well be torn up and burst and stamped on because what ELSE are they good for? Apart from making noise and being NICE and making MORE stupid little mannequins that sit still for lies and TV and kissy-kissy GARBAGE!

I've told you about the WORST THINGS IN THE WORLD, because THAT'S what the world's made of. EVERYTHING is SICK! Am I getting THROUGH to you? EVERYTHING is SICK and I LOVE IT!!

Yeah, in that article Breevort also said that he heard Quesada say that drawing that design armor for the promo was a real pain in the ass for him.

While I can agree with the possibility of this turning out like a trainwreck, this is nothing like OMD/BND. That was a continuity clean up meant to serve as Joe Quesada wanting to erase the marriage out of spite, whereas this is just a relaunch, with a new premise for each book, and presumably the previous continuity will have been kept intact. The only similarities is that BND can be assumed to be a jumping on point, but that really just seems like more of an afterthought to me. Marvel NOW! has a higher chance of succeeding because of the renumbering, thus since potential new readers would be more likely to pick up a book at #1 than at #546, although there's also the opposite in that people at CBR have designated the final issues as jumping off points.

Interview with Rick Remender about Uncanny Avengers. Lots of information there, sounds like some solid work.

After five years of ignoring marvel, I'm more inclined to think of this is Biblical terms.
In other words: "Marvel Not"!

Well, I don't completely ignore them, I do pay attention to the reprints of what came
before the trainwreck of QMD and crummy treatment of the fans.
Proudly #2 on Anti-QMD list.
#1 on the list is Peter Parker. No duh!

Bryan Hibbs, columnist at CBR and comic shop owner, had some interesting and valid critiques about Marvel Now. Some of the big problems that Marvel has in making this work it addressed:

* Considering Marvel's habit of renumbering their titles and the fact that even big names like Bendis and Bagley on Avengers Assemble is only getting 40k, who's to say that this won't be the true breaking point in terms of dimenishing returns?

* Spreading the relaunch out like this, while seemingly having an advantage in that they can do more focus on each book, can backfire real quick and just become another common yet meaningless banner (ala The Heroic Age).

* The lack of info makes it really hard for comic book shops to even try to hype it, let alone enough to hype the regular fanbase.

* Is it possible that maybe Marvel genuinely needs a change up in continuity to clean things up and make a new start for new/lapsed readers? Whether you love it or hate it, it can't be denied that the New 52 not only gave DC a shot in the arm, but the industry as a whole.
