Podcast 181 June 2012: What Did you think?

Postby BD » Sat Jun 23, 2012 1:38 am

Gang the opening song is here and it kicks ass!

What did you think of the show? Topics include:

Here are the highlights of the episodes.
*Spider-Man recently water boarded the Sandman in a recent issue. The gang discusses if this was out of character.

* The new Civil War prose novel omits his marriage and makes him the victim of Tigra's advances. The gang discusses the changes.

*A recent cover of Astonishing X-Men celebrated marriage in the Marvel Universe. They omitted the most famous wedding of all time.

* Voice actor Josh Keaton was recently dubbed over his Spider-Man lines on the Avengers Earth's Mightest Heroes cartoon. Drake Bell re-recorded his lines. The gang chimes in on the Drake and Josh debate.

*Spider-Man saves the Spanish economy with Spider-towels.

*George also has a contest where you can win a trade paperback. Listen to the show for details on what you have to do.

Dude, that song kicks ass, great find
I have a comment on the line "Nothing will bring him back" from the song, the singer said something golden here, remember Dr. Mariah Crawford telling Punisher "Nothing you do will ever bring your family back" how come no other superhero is given that line?

Don and Bertone, love your starting pun about dubbing over another voice actor. Feel sorry for Josh

Funny thing about Spider-Man and Sandman with acid, there's that discussion about Captain America whether he did or did not do wrong, some mentioned Cap -Steve- tortured Dr. Fasutus to get information from him about how to save the city from a danger the psycho doctor made, I'll quote Wolverine's line from his episode in Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon "Sometimes you have to go down to their level"
Nicely said George, I was hoping someone mentions the Punisher, but you also mentioned Wolverine, that's extra credit.
BTW George, you didn't answer the question about your favorite Spider-Man voice

What is that thou hast brought Chris? Reading of the Civil War prose was fun, and more credit for you guys mentioning Thor and others, then calling Spidey a scrawny guy. Does she even know his masked face? And as was mentioned in the prose thread -I think- about Spidey being an avenger for a while before CW
From Scimitar to Merciless, and I'm barely violent :p

I think I'm going to try that contest and win a trade paperback.

Loved the bit about how "Spider-Man with towels" would be be a better story than Ends of the Earth.

Funny, never considered the Drake & Josh thing with the two voice actors.

I'm a fan of Once Upon A Time, but you're pretty much right about them just making their own show based on the same concept.

I'll do the contest thing, but if I win George can keep his money and his trade. I'm doing this out of principle. Are we allowed more than one entry per person?

I was giggling like a little schoolgirl all throughout your reading George :D That was just too hilarious. And curse the fact that I live in Sweden. That contest sounds fun. Oh well, good luck to all who is participating :D

Video of the Live Spidey Marriage at Shea Stadium 6/5/1987 before the Mets played the Pittsburgh Pirates.

They also handed out free copies of ASM Annual #21 as well.

Hey question regarding the Civil War book - isn't the unmasking part of OMD/OMIT? I thought that allowing MJ to remember all of the stuff about living with Spider-man was part of the reason as to why she left Peter before BND. Please correct me if I'm remembering wrong or if this was mentioned in the original recording.

The unmasking is directly the cause of OMD, but takes places during Civil War. The book is supposed to be a look at how Civil War happened in the world changed by Mephisto's interference.

So...I made 6 Peter/MJ covers  It said there were too many attachments for email, so I'll just post them here I guess. Let it be known though I'd like to be exempt from the contest, if I win George can keep the trade or give it to someone else. I'm just doing this for fun, and idk how my folks would feel about me getting comics in the mail from a late 30's Texan man I met online. :P

And yes, I did do that one clone saga panel. Just for Bertone.

This was another hilarious podcast. The dramatic reading had me cracking up. I wish I had listened before the con was over so I could have had Mike Zeck, Ron Garney, or Mark Bagley sketch in a Peter/MJ on the cover :( I got pictures with them and wished I had remembered to print out a Love Crawlspace page for the pictures.

Does the picture have to use official pages from the comics or is fanart allowed? I found a really good picture that I'd like to use, but it's not from any comic. Also, are alternate universes, such as Ultimate Spider-Man allowed?

Re: Podcast 181 June 2012: What Did you think?

The "waterboarding" thing is definitely not a normal thing for Spider-Man to do--but so was basically leading a strike force to save the world. In a lot of ways, Peter was playing the role that Captain America does in the Avengers (and Steve had a recent mini-controversy with torture in Secret Avengers, too). I personally don't believe stuff like water-boarding and torture doesn't work in real-life, but I can take it in limited doses for the more hyperbolic nature of superhero comics.

If anything, the only problem I have with it is that the next issue they mention that they could get Sandman to help, tell him that if Ock succeeds, then Marko's daughter will most definitely die, and Spidey mentions that they probably shouldn't have used the acid bath treatment. Uh...if you thought of that right there, then maybe you should have at least tried using the daughter as leverage BEFORE you brought out the acid.

I will have to disagree about the "the jokes don't make me take the stakes seriously" thing. Yes, his humor is used to piss off his enemies, but it's also a defense mechanism for himself to have power over a daunting situation. I think him making jokes, even if they're just to himself, in this kind of situation is perfectly in character.

The Civil War novelization...makes sense. I'm sure it was mostly just to slim down things for everything in general. Doesn't make the parts you took out sound any less horrible, though. I will say this, though--Tigra being into Spider-Man isn't THAT crazy on a basic level. Not everyone's into the chiseled bodybuilder look--if you don't believe me, look around Tumblr for five minutes and you're bound to see more than a couple of girls salivating over Benedict Cumberbatch.

On the Astonishing #51 variant cover...as much as it annoys me, Breevort's response makes sense. Also, don't you think they're going to expect something like people drawing in Peter/MJ stuff for the sketch variant? I don't see how that's going to change their minds. Also, I don't see the whole "half of them are divorced or dead" thing being a good argument for Peter/MJ because all those fowled-up marriages still happened. It is kind-of an apples/oranges.

Yeah, the "Spider-Man saved Spain's economy" thing was...strange. I mean, the trip to NYC thing is a decent idea. The nekkid-drawing of Elektra idea makes more sense to me.

"Spider-Man! Make it rain!" That was hilarious. :D

"This is like going to Batman: Mask of the Phantasm looking for Kevin Conroy and getting Carrot Top." Again, I think this is a bad comparison, since this situation is a completely different show with different producers and creators, and this other character is not even a big player in the whole show. A better comparison is probably the Justice League: Crisis on Two Worlds where Batman was voiced by one of the shitty Baldwins who's name I don't remember--sure, I would have prefered Conroy, but they're not obligated to cast Conroy for every Batman related thing on the planet.

Good episode. :)

Double negative there makes it confusing but I'm guessing you mean torture doesn't work.
