Who writes the funniest Spider-man?

Post by Cheesedique » Tue Mar 17, 2015 12:58 pm

This is kind of a spinoff of another discussion (of the new ASM special issue that just came out), and I was wondering what your thoughts on this topic are.

Who has written (or is writing) the funniest Spider-man?

I think writers get too hung up on making Spider-man an annoying quipster, when the situations he finds himself in can lend themselves just as much to the humorous vibe of Spider-man. DeMatteis did this very well in stories that featured Frogman and the White Rabbit. Lighthearted stuff that didn't take itself too seriously, and sent up the usual superhero tropes, but at the same time still worked very well in terms of being a superhero comic.

For some reason Tom Defalco comes to mind first. When Peter would joke in his runs it always felt so natural where as a lot of Spidey humor feels forced or obligatory by other writers. There's a lot of Slott stuff I've giggled at. But definitely Defalco for me
Like costume heroes? Confidentially we in the comic mag business refer to them as "Long Underwear Characters"! and, as you know, they're a dime a dozen! But we think you may find our SPIDERMAN just a bit... different!

I always go back to PAD of course. His take on Parker himself wasn't only funny, but often the situations or the comments of random characters were written very funny / clever as well.

I can't think of any DeFalco Spider-man I thought was particularly funny.

Bendis in Ultimate Spidey usually came out with some decent zingers, especially towards the start of the run.
Read Hobson & Choi - my comedy-mystery webserial - right now.

I agree. Bendis' Spidey had jokes that not only came off as legitimately funny, they also seemed to come across like they were off the cuff remarks, rather than prepared statements that most writers tend to depict the jokes as.

I think Bendis' funniest moment in the entire run has to be when he has Spider-Man pull out the joke cards he wrote for the Kingpin and starts reading them off to his face. I keep hearing people argue that Spider-Man uses his humor to throw his opponents off their game, but I never saw that in action until then.

I also think JMS wrote some pretty funny stuff for Spidey, pretty much for the same reasons. I just think Bendis' material was a bit funnier.

I always found JMS's Spidey amusing but this often came from situational humour as oppposed to one liners. And like others have said, Peter David and Brian Michael Bendis also write a funny Spider-Man.
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"

Gonna third Peter David. He knows how to make Spidey witty and sarcastic as well as just generally hilarious without turning him into a clown. Stan Lee was also incredibly good at the witty dialogue stuff.

I would also have to go with Peter David. The Commuter Commeth (Amazing vol. 1 #267) and Eyewitness (Spectacular vol. 1 #121) are both comedic gold.

For this I think Stan Lee by quite a lot.

I still remember a Stan Lee panel where an underworld goon says, "No sweat", and Spidey quips, "A guy like you shouldn't make promises about perspiration!"
