Spectacular Spider-Man # 27

Writer: Paul Jenkins

Art: Mark Buckingham

Back Story: After 19 dreadful months of sorry stories, Howard Mackie gave Peter Parker: Spider-Man over to up and comer Paul Jenkins, with Issue 20. that issue dealt with the fact that Peter lost his sense of humor, and he turned to Uncle Ben for advice. Well, I guess things come full circle, as the artist that brought that story to life, returns to bid a farewell for Paul Jenkins, and himself. So, I bid you, The Final Curtain.

Our story begins with Young Peter and Ben playing in the snow. Ben appears, and they wish each other Merry Christmas. Ben is wearing a scarf, and Peter inquires why. “I refuse to answer that on the grounds that it might get me in trouble with the man upstairs.” They discuss the atrocious Snowmen they made, and how Aunt May would always say the same thing: You pair of twits. But Ben senses that there is something wrong. Peter feels lost, like he knows that he will die, but the hand of his enemy. Ben reminds him of his first grade play, and how he screwed up. He reminds him it’s not only because he let the burglar go, but that he never forgave himself for the deaths of his parents. He has to forgive himself. He tells him to go live. That they’ll be waiting. Aunt May then appears, and see more of the snowmen… uttering: “You pair of twits.”

Our last scene, is at night. Peter’s dream. The audience is clapping. We see Big John, Richie, Richard and Mary, Carylin, Gwen, MJ, JJJ, Ben and Aunt May. The Young Peter Smiles. And A bunch of characters bow. Fusion, Vulture, the Mimes, the Indian Girl, The Giant Robot from PPSM 50, Sandman, Typeface, Electro, Doc Ock, Mysterio, Shocker, Rhino, Venom, Chameleon, PJ, Mark, Mr. Ramos I think that Kevin Smith is even in there, with a paper labeled: Deadline. Oh, and Kevin the Cheese.  And the Ameba thing… And Green Goblin.

Thus, my run as reviewer ends as well. PJ, You know My favorite Issue. If you ever are in Texas , give me a ring. I would love to have that signed.

Rating: Five for Five. A flawless issue. The only other title I gave a 5 for was SSM 14. Ironically, a single stand alone story.

I’ll be around, ya know writing my CSA Stories. See ya in the Funny Papers!

Sins Remembered… Part Four *thank god* (of 4)

Writer: Barnes

Art: Eaton

Inks: Smith

Plot:

Our issue starts off with MJ in terror, and Gabe about to kill her. Then he believes that MJ is Sarah. Last issue it was revealed as the people who were following Peter and Sarah was Interpol, the French CIA, and its agent, Benoit. Sarah goes after Depres, and kicks major butt. But just as she tries to kill him, Peter, who survived his encounter with Gabe, saves her, and tries to make it to where they will be keeping the pease, like the Avengers. Mj and her have a heart to heart… and Peter kisses like a brother. Which MJ uses against him on the plane. Happy ending.

Likes: Okay, as for the rest of the story, it sucked. The ending, when all the pieces fell in, it make it a better story overall. Art was good, and Sarah kicked major Arse. Which is always good.

Dislikes: The other issues.

3.5 out of 5.

To the last issue!

Before I begin with the next review, I’d like to say it’s been a real treat to be Crawl Space’s reviewer these past 15 issues.

Sins Remembered… Part Three (of 4)

Writer: Barnes

Art: Eaton

Inks: Smith

It’s the 25 Anniversary Specia- wait. Nope, we have Part three of a 4 part story.

Well, The Stacy’s were drug traffickers but night, so they became increasingly dependant on painkillers. Now, they have to pay off the debts, or Depres, the gang leader, will kill them. MJ shows up as Sarah tries to kiss Peter, and storms out. She returns later, to fin Gabe, in the Osborn household!

Likes: Art, and fact that the god-awful cover isn’t reflecting on the story.

Dislikes: The fact that the kiss almost happened, how Gabe appeared out of nowhere, not a single explanation on how he got there.

Rating: 1.5 out of 5

That’s right, a 1.5, you’ve got a problem with it?

Sins Remembered… Part Two (of 4)

Writer: Barnes

Art: Eaton

Okay, I was a little critical on last issue. Will this issue change my mind? Read, and Find out!

Okay, I may or may have failed to mention that there is a mystery man following Gwen-er Sarah… Jeez, they look so alike, it’s hard to tell.. anyway, and they spend the day together. We find out more and more about Norman , and his relationship with the kids. She decides to spend the day with Sarah. As she gets ready, we find her talking with about some dude named Dupres, and we see her go crazy again. And MJ rushes off to France to meet and greet them. We see them go off and see the sights… and they eat a picnic in a cemetery, as our issue ends with someone fixing to shoot him…

Likes: Overall it’s not as bad as I’d thought it’d be. Desent issue, with more and more about the Split Personality angle. I think that would be the strength of this story, has say, JM DeMatthis had handled it. Art was okay…. Some spots not as good others, really good.

Dislikes: Why does she always have to be on her cell phone at the end?

3.0 out of 5—Slighty better this issue than last. After seeing that cover for next ish, I’m WORRIED.

Sins Remembered: Part 1 (of 4)

Writer: Samm Barnes

Pencils: Scott Eaton

Inks: Cam Smith

Plot:

Our Issue starts with Gwen, er I mean, her Clone, wait…. Sarah Osborn-Stacy looking like she’s overdosed on drugs. Peter then rushes to Paris . Upon arriving, he explains to the doctors the relationship between the two. Which, I won’t go into, in large part because of… well, I don’t wanna. Anyway, after a lengthy conversation, Sarah reveals that every part in her body is hurting, due to the strain due to her “special” blood. They go to the mansion that Norman was using back when he was “Dead”. Peter goes out, Sarah takes those pills, shows her Norman Split personality. And our issue ends with her talking on the phone, about “maybe no one has to die”

Likes: Well… Spilt Personality is always good. Art was…. Pretty good.

Dislikes: Everything else. Stupid Story, Plot, and NO Villain. Lame all around.

Again, we see another one issue story. Will it be like last issue, which was great, or terrible?

Story: Mindworm. A long forgotten villain who ends up being a bum on the side of a street. His only confort is the bottle, and he’s lost his mind. Spidey tries to save him, from some kids, but Mindworm ends up killing himself in the process.

Likes: Simple story. It’s powerful, knowing that Spidey could do something about his death, but arriving too late. The last page was powerful.

Dislikes: The Art… it’s eh. I’m used to Romtia Jr. and Deodato Jr., and Bagley… to me, it sucked.

Story: It’s the annual Super-Hero poker game! Yes folks, the game is Texas Hold ‘em (a game for Texans by Texans. Yes, I am Partial. I’m a Texan) We got Doc Strange, Angel, Spidey, Cat, Thing, and Johnny. And Reed is dealer. Suddenly, the Kingpin shows up and puts the stakes higher. We see that Strange is perhaps the worst player in the world. But with that, he’s quickly taken out. It all comes down to the Kingpin and Spidey. Wow. 4 nines, and he gets the prize! So, with that said, he’s giving it to the Cerebal Palsy Research Foundation in Kansas . He takes Twenty, and gets roses for the wife.

Likes: After the mess of last arc it was refreshing to read this single issue story. The art was okay, but it was Jenkins at his best: Single issue stories.

Dislikes: Kingpin’s appearance was out of continuity. Okay, I’m reaching.

Avengers Disassembled—Tie In

Story: Spidey is a Spider, no, not the human spider… a really big… spider. Why? See the Queen wants to mate, and Spidey is the choice! But with Captain America and the entire Marvel Universe looking for them, Spidey has to improvise. He gets out of his shell and backfires Queen’s plan. By seeping the life out of her. But Peter notices something different, his tights are snug, and webbing is coming outta his wrists and he can talk to insects…. Like Ant-Man.

Likes: Nick Fury and Cap, I’m really reaching.

Dislikes: It seemed so rushed. That’s the problem with Jenkins and long arcs, they seem too rushed at the end. The organic webbing is a real stretch for me. I can accept it, but the insects? INSECTS? Spider is an Arachnid, not an insect! Jeez!

Story: MJ is more in character, as she’s worrying about Peter. Meanwhile Peter is struggling with the transformation, as he continues. Meanwhile, Cap is further explaining the Bomb. But throughout all of this, the X-Men with the fantastic Four are out searching for Spidey and the Queen. The Queen tries Threaten the American people with exploding the bomb in two days, but the government incepts it, and Cap chooses to stop her before she gets to do it. And After a meeting with the queen, it seems like curtains for Spidey: Transformation Complete.
Likes: The Tension is cut through with a knife; the next issue will have a lot of action. I’m happy about that. The Art was stunning, as it played perfectly one the grotesque faces, (Which Ramos does well, I’ll admit) but draws humans the way they should be drawn. The Queen is Hot too… Kinda.
Dislikes: Four artists in one story arc are too much. You need one artist, one arc. It’s plain and simple on that note.

Story: After the Four Bugged Eyed Peter continues hate the light, MJ drags him to a wedding. They attend a Star Trek Wedding, which makes for a funny moment. Peter leaves, and continues his transformation into a Spider. The Bomb is explained as a Cold War Weapon to be used against the soviets. It’s because of that, that Cap has deemed this important and a matter of national security. It will kill everyone expect the one with the insect gene. Spidey is continuing the transformation, with four new arms, and teeth. And Hair, lots of hair.
Likes: The Art is better than the last issue, with the sticking visuals on the flashbacks, but the Cap is goofy looking. But still the Writing is shining though, with an excellent arc overall. The Tension is building. Looks bad for Spidey.
Dislikes: What’s up with MJ? She lost her mind? No. She too, is being controlled by the Queen, that’s why they’re perfect for each other, it in the genes.

Story: Our story opens with Peter and Mary Jane in the park, with Peter doing “research”. He keeps thinking that the Queen did something to him. He can’t shake that feeling. She tells a story of how the government had created insect people. That she was one of the few survivors. She plans to kill half the eastern seaboard, using the bomb created by the government. (Explained by Cap and his old army buddy, named Tommy to Nick Fury at this time.) But When MJ comes home later on….. He has eyes, Four, of them.
Likes: Man Spider. Kay, works for me. But they should referenced the stinking ASM 437, Tom Defalco’s version of events. Still interesting how this ties into Disassembled. Some could say that Peter is not in character, I disagree. This fact that Peter is troubled with the fact that he kissed a strange woman, which made it onto national television, is perfect. The Momentum is on Jenkins side.
Dislikes: Nothing to tie into the story. The Art is terrible, in my opinion, and I’d be glad to take Ryan back.

She grows angered, and makes Spidey Pass out. Nick Fury, who tries to use military force, but a superior officer has him stand down. Cap then attacks the Queen, and frees Spidey. But the Queen makes things worse with people jumping off building, and seemingly falls to her death as well. Cap and Spidey Argue, and he swings off leaving Cap stunned.
Likes: I enjoyed Cap, but there is too many lingering questions that make this not the best story, such as how did the Queen know Cap? Or how this is a part of Disassembled? I loved the Art, it’s good to see Ryan does covers on the Marvel Age series, as he does a great Spidey!
Dislikes: To many questions, not enough answers.
