Spider-Man Crawl Space 101
and FAQ
Webmaster's Name: Brad Douglas
Age:

Profession:
Journalist and web
producer. I work as
a reporter/anchor for a local NBC affiliate.
When did you start up the
Spider-Man Crawl Space Web site?
I started this web site on August 8, 1998. I was surfing around
the net in the wee-small hours of the morning and found geocities.
They offered free web page hosting and I couldn't resist. I knew
nothing of html, and didn't have any programs to write it out. So
I manually typed in the html tags and text. It was a great
learning experience. I now have a program that does it all for me, but it's nice to know the guts of html.
The Crawl Space has undergone
many looks throughout the years. Here are a few examples.
The Message Board has also
undergone many changes.
2002 Bravenet free board |
2003 Matt's Scripts Board |
2006 phpBB powered board |
Over the years
the Crawl Space has received some nice publicity on major websites and
publications
Yahoo Internet Life magazine recommends the Crawl Space
Wizard Magazine 2001
recommends the Crawl Space
|
Entertainment Weekly 2002
article mentions BD and the Crawl Space
USA Today 2002 online and print version mentions the Crawl Space
Todd Aaron Smith, a
children's book author did this sketch of BD on TV with a certain web-head
watching. Smith also did animation work on the 90s Spider-Man cartoon.

Why start up Spider-Man Crawl Space dot com?
I was slowly growing out of my geocities account. They only gave away 15 free
megs of space and instead of paying for more space, I decided to go all out and
do the site up right. I was going to buy the domain name, braddouglas.com
but it was already taken.
Spidermancrawlspace.com
just seemed like a natural. The new site surpasses the old
geocities one by leaps and bounds. Plus get this, no obnoxious yahoo ads in the
upper right hand corner!!!!! Wa-Hoo!
Why start up a Spider-Man web
site?
I've been a fan of
Spider-Man ever since I was two years old. I had wanted to start
up my own site for awhile, and a site devoted to my favorite web
head was a natural. I was also wanting to communicate with other
fans and vent about the current happenings of Spider-Man through
reviews.
I wanted my own niche on the web. So far I'm pretty
happy with the results of the site and the communication with
the
other fans on the web. We're had millions of hits, and everytime a new movie
comes out, the hits go crazy.
What was your first Spider-Man
comic?
My first Spidey comic was Marvel Team Up Annual # 2. It had a
very dynamic cover featuring Spidey struggling to separate two
giant magnets and the
Incredible Hulk looming in the background,
just waiting to pounce. Spider-Man and the Hulk remain my two all
time favorite characters.
How many comics do you have in
your collection?
I've been collecting since 1978 and the picture on the right is of
my 60+ long comic boxes.
So 300 comics in a box, times 60
=18,000 comics.
Each month I get my monthly fix from
mailordercomics.com
so it increases
each month.
How many Spider-Man comics do
you own?
I own almost all of them. I
have a complete collection of Amazing Spider-Man from issue #
22-441, and then the re-boot. I have a complete run of Web of
Spider-Man, Spectacular Spider-Man, Peter Parker: Spider-Man,
Marvel Team Up, Sensational Spider-Man, WebSpinners etc. I've got
the other Amazing Spider-Man's from # 1-21 reprinted in the
Marvel MasterWorks format. Needless to say I'm familiar with Spidey. Can we spell Marvel Zombie? I knew you could!
What is your favorite section
of your web site?
My favorite section is without a doubt the
message board.
There is always a hot debate breaking out in there. It's great to interact
with the other fans. There are hundreds of registered members, and who knew
there were so many Spidey geeks?
My second favorite section is the Weird Marvel Collectibles section. I love to surf the web and find weird
and awkward toys that has Spidey and the Marvel Heroes on it. I
love that Spider-Man Toilet paper picture.
Interesting story of updating
and maintaining a Spider-Man Web Site?
It's always fun to get
e-mails from little kids thinking I am Spider-Man. I pull a
"Santa" on them, and tell them that I am not Spidey, but am a "good friend of his." I then tell them that I
passed their letter onto him.
Another cool opportunity was to interview Spider-Man himself. For more of that, click
on this link.
How many people maintain the
Spider-Man Crawl Space web site?
I maintain it with a few folks. I have a half dozen reviewers who give their
monthly take on the various Spidey books. On the message board I have
Morbius and
Spideydude who help
filter out the spam and keep the conversations rolling.
What seperates
this Spidey site from the rest?
I try to create a site that I would want to visit. There are a ton of Spider-Man
sites on the net, and I feel we are doing just that with the Weird Collectibles,
a popular message board, and up-to-date news. We must be doing something right
to be spotlighted in USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, and Yahoo Internet Life
Magazine.
Well folks,
that's my bio and some questions and answers. If you have any
others, feel free to
ask me in an e-mail.
Keep on swinging!
