Avengers
Next 1 (of 5)
Previously, in the Harras Administration at Marvel,
Bob Harras, in one of his better ideas, launched the Marvel Comics 2 line
of books, consisting of J2, the Son of the Juggeranut, A-Next, the
next-gen Avengers, and Spider-Girl. After 12 issues, the A-Next title and
J2 were cancelled. Since then, we’ve had The Buzz, Darkdevil, Wild thing,
and the Fantastic 5. And more recently, Last Planet Standing, and Last
Hero Standing.
Taking from the Events of the latter two series, Our
issue opens with a question:
“Does the world still need Avengers?”
Co-Plotted By: Ron Lim,
and Tom DeFalco
Inks: Scott Koblish
The Avengers are in disarray, as several of their
number are not longer available, such as Spider-Girl, Thunderstrike, (Who
lost his powers but is still around in mansion), Freebooter, and
Mainframe, Iron Man’s Android. While discussing this, a person snuck into
the forbidden zones of the Mansion, and stole a box. He returns to his
masters, who one is a frail old woman, and the other is a giant hulk like
being. Stinger, who left the Avengers after political squabbles, is still
gone on her own to get away from squabbling. A former villain, the son of
Sabertooth, Saberclaw, joins the Avengers in a unholy alliance, they need
him to face the cluster of Zombies that are attacking the mansion. J2 and
bluestreak go to help and Spider-Girl in her red hoodie from ASG 1 is gone
to help. The old woman is controlling the zombies, and the big guy and the
intruder named Warp sneak into the mansion. When big dude get ahold of
Jarvis, Eric Masterson, Thunderstrike, fire a blast to reveal… Ulik the
Unconquerable! Ulik then takes our friend Eric and it looks like the new
A-Next have a problem on their hands…
Likes: I like the fact that Mayday is sans costume. I
really do like that. Continuity…. Isn’t grand? I also liked the Art this
ish, as Ron Lim is one of my favorite artists. And this Ulik dude, I donno
who he is, but I know he’s an old Avengers villain, maybe we’ll see more
and more as time goes on.
Dislikes: A bit of minor quibbles here and there, like
Spider-Girls costume on the cover. The Spider was a bit off. I like Ringo,
and his first Spider cover was Sensational Spider-Man 8… with Ben
Reilly… But he likes the series so it’s a treat to have him do the covers.
Rating: 4 out of 5.
